  • And yet another backlash

The British broadcasting station Channel 5 has decided not to cover the funeral on Monday.

    https://www.indy100.com/news/queen-f...ovie-channel-5

With the Queen’s funeral taking place on Monday and most TV channels blocking out their schedules to livestream the ceremony, it’s understandable if some people want to watch something a little bit lighter during the current period of national mourning.

The Emoji Movie, however, is not what we – or indeed, many others – had in mind, but it’s being offered on Channel 5 from 11:10am, right when the BBC, ITV and Sky will be airing the funeral service of the late monarch which begins at 11am.

The 2017 animated film, which starred James Corden and Patrick Stewart as the hi-5 and poop emoji respectively (yes, really), was a commercial flop – with the site Rotten Tomatoes giving it a Tomatometer score of just six per cent.

It’s worth mentioning, just in case you were somehow expecting the movie to be a cinematic masterpiece.

The channel will then air Stuart Little at 12:30pm, followed by the third film in the Ice Age series – Dawn of the Dinosaurs – at 1:55pm.

However, it’s Channel 5’s decision to air The Emoji Movie which has been praised online, after entertainment reporter Scott Bryan shared the news on Friday

Which resulted in this - from The Daily Express - no surprises there!

However, it’s Channel 5’s decision to air The Emoji Movie which has been praised online, after entertainment reporter Scott Bryan shared the news on Friday:

According to the TV schedule, Channel 5 will not be broadcasting any of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral on Bank Holiday Monday. Instead, the broadcaster will air a selection of children's TV programmes including Fireman Sam and Thomas & Friends. They will also show a number of films in the afternoon ranging from The Emoji Movie, Stuart Little and Ice Age 3.

The broadcaster's decision has sparked a strong reaction online, and while some viewers are thrilled about the move, others were less than impressed.

In response to @SuperTV247's tweet about the schedule shake-up, viewer Ryan fumed: "Boycott channel 5."

Stepping in to defend the channel, user @Official_WXUK replied: "Support Channel 5."

While Holland & Jervis added: "The bosses at channel 5 are truly evil."

Brooke Kelly commented: "Channel 5 really said **** the Queen and **** Neighbours."

"Disrespectful move by Channel 5," user @0xx0_Lester went on to say.

Jamies Davies raged: "@Channel5Press @channel5_tv shame on you for not broadcasting the Queens funeral."

Ian Stewart was also pleased with Channel 5's schedule, tweeting: "Channel 5 kinda day then it is." (sic)

Joel Clements weighed in: "Why do you need every channel showing the same thing? Makes no sense… just leave it to the traditional channels." (sic)

Channel 5 won't be the only broadcaster not airing the Queen's funeral.

Channel 4 have also made the decision not to show the Queen being laid to rest, instead, they will be airing a documentary as a tribute to the monarch.

A Queen Is Crowned, a documentary from 1953 will be broadcast from 12pm, followed by a Channel 4 News summary.

The broadcaster will also observe a two-minute silence in memory of the Queen.

Discussing its decision to not air the Queen's funeral, a Channel 4 spokesman said: "On the day Britain says farewell to its longest serving monarch, Channel 4 will be airing A Queen Is Crowned, the classic 1953 documentary about her coronation, so that viewers can experience both the beginning and end of her remarkable reign.

"Following the service, Channel 4 will also broadcast two extended editions of Channel 4 News as well as the 1943 Vera Lynn film, We’ll Meet Again," they added to Metro.co.uk.

Channel 5 and Channel 4 may not be airing the funeral, but Sky BBC and ITV will be.

I am commenting on the nonsense that is paralysing the British at present and offering further evidence of a RW tabloid in fomenting discord to suit its own agenda.

Good for them. Counter programing when everyone else is showing exactly the same thing could well be a good business strategy.

I'm always still in trouble again

Good grief! We agree on something. And why should every channel have to cover exactly the same thing? The word overkill comes to mind.

Just since Tuesday four threads started -- and today is still far from over

He is your "liege lord" and any public dissent can lead to your arrest

"Room for one more inside". Foreign dignitaries must share buses for Queen's funeral

Is it "What she would have wanted"?

This basically explains a lot of the so-called 'over reactions' across the country for the last few days. Many companies, public sector institutions, etc. are concerned about what might be said about them by various dirty right wing media sites and papers.

It is an anecdote, and anecdotes are not data, however I can confirm the public sector where I work was very concerned last week about what should be done in the 10 days immediately after the announcement of the queen's death, up until the day of the funeral, which factored directly in to them making the decision to cancel various events and close various council-owned locations. Certain places remain open (locations for books of condolence, etc), but some have closed.

Another factor is that the day of the funeral is a bank holiday. That in itself isn't an issue, but several places that would otherwise be open shut on bank holidays, which then has a direct impact on services - some of which are already heavily impacted and behind due to Covid and austerity. Bit of a mess, really.

I don't think even the pope's death would get this much coverage, and that would affect more people on the planet (predominantly Catholic countries for sure). We still live in Eurocentric times and this queen-death bruhaha surely highlights it. A million Chinese might die from an earthquake tomorrow and we'd still be hearing about how many roses were laid are on the queen's coffin as a top story. Just freaking nuts - and irritating.

On Newsmax homepage today, of the Top 10 stories, 9 are related to the queen somehow. Good golly.

The underlying question remains. Isn't this all a bit OTT?

Although I suppose perhaps you should be grateful that she did not die on 22nd of December which would have entailed cancelling Christmas!

I also wonder if the crowds would have queued for miles in a mid December London!

I entirely agree and wouldn't all that money spent on floral tributes have been better donated to the Pakistan flood appeal? Or indeed any charity?

Instead there is nothing but thousands of pounds worth of potential compost.

Perhaps. But her longevity isn't newsworthy. I've had a relative or two that outlived her.
