Most political parties don't give into their lunatic wing, so it normally isn't an issue. UK & USA have recently bucked the trend in that department, however. With obvious and predictable consequences.

But the system was in a poor condition to begin with, following 12 years of Tory misrule - so the results were worse then they could have been.

Conservatives get in, tear everything down and it all goes to crap. Liberals get in, try their best to fix it, get blamed for conservative crappiness, conservatives get voted back in, ruin it again... rinse repeat.

It's so predictable and utterly wearying.

I would not describe the British political system as having been "set up"! The word evolved might be more appropriate.

Furthermore, Ms Truss was not actually elected by the British electorate; and if you have been following the British news you will be aware of the increasing evidence of corruption and cronyism within the present government.

Unfortunately, and unlike the USA, Germany, and manty other countries, Britain does not have a written constitution; despite calls going back several decades that one should be created.

As the historian Peter Hennessy noted, the British system ultimately relies on good chaps doing the right thing. Unfortunately in recent years good chaps have been few and far between in the governing party. Johnson is now under investigation for lying to parliament; then there were the Covid party scandals. the appointment of a known sexual harasser to the position of Deputy Chief Whip, the awarding, during Covid, of highly lucrative PPE contracts to friends and associates [without due process of open tendering]; and the most recent scandals of Gavin Williamson [who has now been kicked out for the third time] and Suella Braverman who is back as Home Secretary a mere six days after she was forced to resign.

Meanwhile that Sunak is [at least at the moment] showing public support for Raab illustrates just how far into the gutter [or perhaps that should be sewer] the system has gone.

In 50 years will Truss be anything more than a footnote?

Probably the million dollar answer on some quiz show for who was the shortest serving PM.

I wonder what a million bucks will be worth after 50 years of Bidenomics...

There. That should be about enough to cover the rent this month.
