Dude chill, I wasn't trying to claim it was held by all Christians ever. I just said it was an awful old doctrine. The EO have generally held and taught very positive and inoffensive views about hell, and I'm not criticizing them.

Even so, I wouldn't call it an awful old doctrine. Using one old example from a schismatic isn't especially useful for establishing a useful broad brush.

Granted that Thomas Aquinas and Peter Lombard are influential Catholic sources, I wouldn't say that Jonathan Edwards is a particularly accurate summation of Protestant thought either.
Enter the Church and wash away your sins. For here there is a hospital and not a court of law. Do not be ashamed to enter the Church; be ashamed when you sin, but not when you repent. – St. John Chrysostom

Isaiah 66:24 specifically refers to corpses so there is no hint of anybody actively suffering. Even if one did read that into the text (perhaps based on how that passage is quoted in the New Testament and based on other theological views on hell), it would not support the idea of the saints gaining pleasure from it. Isaiah 66:24 says that they are "loathsome"; the entire tenor of the passage is sober-cast (and certainly doesn't gel with Tertullian's view of comparing it to the circus, theater, etc.)

I personally do not believe that people in the New Jerusalem will be concerned about those who did not make it in, since such things are supposed to be remembered no more.
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

It also seems to be a bit of a stretch to call it "doctrine."

I'm always still in trouble again
