  • A Bidentastic week and Trump's very bad one

After Biden sleepwalked his way through 1.5 years of presidency, somehow a whole lot of wins for him have occurred in the last week or two, and a whole lot of losses for Trump. There's so many of each I thought a summary thread to aggregate them all is worth is.

Positives for Biden / the Dems:
    • Al Qaeda leader killed.
    • Chips Act to help US manufacturing signed.
    • Inflation Reduction Act negotiated, containing a lot of climate-change stuff.
    • 500k jobs added in July.
    • Inflation was zero in July, on the back of continuously falling oil prices.

    Negatives for Trump:
    • FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago, reportedly searching for classified documents he inappropriately had. The FBI director and the judge who signed off on the warrant were both Trump appointees.
    • Trump testified in court and pled the 5th over 400 times in an ongoing investigation into insurance, bank and tax fraud by him, which his personal attorney Michael Cohen has publicly said he is guilty of. Trump has previously said only the mob and guilty people plead the 5th.
    • A judge ordered Trump's tax returns be turned over to the Democrats in congress investigating them.
    • The investigation into the fake-electors scheme in Georgia seems to closing in.
    • Pictures were released of documents ripped up and flushed down the toilet by Trump, confirming claims by multiple White House aides that Trump would regularly try to dispose of documents in this fashion in breach of legal requirements of presidential document preservation.
Overall it's been a huge news week and the hits have just kept coming. There's been so many I've probably forgotten a couple from this list.

The Labor Department on Wednesday said the consumer-price index, a measure of what consumers pay for goods and services, rose 8.5% in July from the same month a year earlier, down from 9.1% in June. June marked the fastest pace of inflation since November 1981.

You're (deliberately?) confusing the year leading up to July with the actual month of July.

Or, I'm using the statistic that's been being referenced over and over for inflation this entire time, not the new, cherry picked one that Biden/you decided to use for spin.

Yup. Old Joe is now claiming that inflation is now at zero percent and the MSM has been lapping it up. Inflation slowed for the first time this year but it remains only 0.2% less than the highest CPI (8.7%) in 40 years.

I'm always still in trouble again

The American media has a stupid habit of annualizing quarterly GDP growth and annualizing monthly inflation which makes both extremely misleading. I try and avoid misleading statistics wherever possible.

In the month of July there was zero inflation. i.e. in July, on average, prices didn't increase, they remained the same from the start of the month to the end of the month.

There were months before July. In those months, prices rose. In July they didn't. If you sum the inflation across the last 12 months, they add to 8.5%. But July itself is adding 0% to that total.

Hopefully everyone can understand the difference between 1 month and 12 months. And so everyone can understand that inflation being zero in July doesn't mean that there wasn't inflation in the previous 11 months.

This thread was about news out this week (not news that was months old) and inflation in July had just been calculated and found to be zero and that figure was released this week. Everyone already knew inflation had been high months ago, so that wasn't new this week.

And that's just the year to year measurement. If we look at the overall rate of inflation from the time Joe has occupied the White House, it's in the neighborhood of 30% (or higher).

Along with the addition of tens of thousands of new IRS agents to "recover" taxes from hard-working US citizens. Of course Joe pinky swears that they won't be going after anybody making less than $400,000 a year, but statistically, 90% of those audited by the IRS each year earn less than $400,000.

Oh, and this new army of IRS agents? They will be armed and authorized to use deadly force.

It should be interested in seeing how the gang that tried to gaslight us with spending hundreds of billions of dollars and proclaiming that it won't cost us anything (it's already paid for) explain an actual overall drop in inflation.

It's funny, economists trying to explain how it's going to fight inflation have had to struggle. "It's a medium term measure. It's impacts aren't next month, but 2023/2024 time frame. It's puts downward pressure on inflation..."

Some Democrats are using the "If you're innocent, then you have nothing to worry about" rationalization. Another one I've heard is that we should be happy about a more ruthlessly efficient IRS because they will be able to force everybody to pay their "fair share".
