I'm already getting nervous about the debate over what happened and when, because we know what happened with Sandy Hook. People seized on inconsistent reports, made up a conspiracy theory that it never happened or was staged by the government, and harassed the family members of victims for years to come. We know it'll happen here.

(It's in principle little different from how people take the fact that some of the minor details in the gospel accounts aren't easy to match up and use that to argue that the whole thing was made up.)

And this is a case where one person's official account may make another police agency or school administration look incompetent -- everybody seems to be playing CYB now.

I think the only thing that is clear is what I said from the git-go --- the school administration (and community) seemed to be suffering from a "it can't possibly happen here" mentality, and there were NO safety protocols being honored.

I got nothing! He apparently shot for TWELVE MINUTES outside the school, then went in through an unlocked door --- still hearing conflicting reports on the "armed officer was in the building" --- but most credible reports seem to say, no, there was no armed officer inside.

No, the spokesman said today that within four minutes after the shooter entered the building two officers showed up entered, and briefly exchanged gun fire - then they left and ran outside - they didn't finally kill him until an hour later...Would you have left that building CP?

When asked a hypothetical like that, my mind always goes immediately to Peter --- "even if EVERYBODY abandons you, Lord, I won't!"

But, to be honest - no, I'm not one to back down once I commit to a fight.

I still can't figure this, though.... how is the gunman engaging them and running them out of the building if he's barricaded in the classroom and they can't get in?

I have to admit I'm kinda relieved --- the more information we are getting, the more concerned we are that we'd be walking into a bigger mess than we could have imagined.

I suspect schools in the USA operate in a remarkably similar way to schools across the world.

However, keeping children effectively in lock-down for the duration of their school day is not giving them an overly reassuring outlook on the general state of the society into which they are growing up.

For someone who has claimed he works a great deal with those suffering from mental health issues you seem somewhat dismissive of issues surrounding the causes of anxiety and stress in children.

On the very first day, some of the talking heads on FNC were suggesting restrictions on selling guns to people under age 21. That sounds to me like a form of "gun control."

But please don't let me disrupt your leftard narrative with facts.

I would venture to say that most lone gunman who commit such evil acts aren't going to have a record of any kind. They've just kept to themselves their whole lives. Any stricter gun laws aren't going to bar these people from buying guns. On the surface, they have always appeared mentally stable. Also, getting someone declared mentally defective by a court is not an easy task. How many of these mass shooters had felonies or were pronounced mental by a court or a psychiatrist before they carried out their evil?

Right, as it should be, when dealing with a Constitutional right. You want to lessen gun deaths - have a Federal mandatory five years in prison for anyone using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Of course the leftists won't support that because it will fall hardest on the minority communities.

It's worth pointing out that at every gun show I've been to, sales from licensed dealers were by far the majority of transactions happening, and those are regulated exactly the same as gun shops. It's only transactions between private parties which aren't subject to those rules, and some of those transactions do occur at gun shows. But then, those same types of private transactions happen absent the gun shows as well.

I'd say that the sizeable majority of such transfers take place outside of gun shows.

One suggestion that may actually be relevant to some of the higher profile shootings is to raise the law for most gun purchases from 18 to 21, with certain exceptions (hunting rifles or anyone in the military). Several of the higher profile incidents have involved people within that age range, some of whom did buy the weapons explicitly for that purpose. This may be an easier pill politically since Trump did raise the tobacco age to 21 without a whole lot of pushback.

IIRC, federal law prohibits the sale of handguns to anyone under the age of 21 but several states allow it at 18. In this case federal law should trump state law but I'm not sure it is enforced.

Same here in the Colorado schools my wife has worked in.

Are these on every door because it seems like a fire hazard. And when a side door is left unlocked it really doesn't matter.

I didn't mean to make it an exclusive. However, my experience in the mental health industry tells me they don't have a concept of evil. Everything is feelings with lesser emphasis on morality. Trying to say another way, mental health is more concerned with you being comfortable than right.

I think there are people who are just plain evil and no amount of mental health treatment is going to change that.

Making them comfortable with their condition would explain the whole trans enabling drek going on.

I suspect you intended to write concerning Europe, the "education systemS there". Our respective education systems do vary.

However, with reference to Resource Officers and school buildings being unlocked, do people really want their children effectively incarcerated within their educational establishments behind locked doors, high perimeter fences, and with armed Resource Officers patrolling the premises from the time the children arrive in school until the time they are released to go home.

What sort of message is that sending to children about the wider society?

I'll note that when I moved here from an area where HS students typically left the campus and went to a nearby "mini-mall" to eat lunch, one of the first things I noticed were the barbwire-topped fences designed to keep people in and not out

But the locked doors being discussed keep people from entering not exiting so incarcerated in the same sense that someone might keep the doors on their house locked even when at home

When I said "first reports from the field are always wrong" -- even I didn't know HOW wrong they were!!!

I'm hearing a lot of talk about how so many protocols have been "forgotten" after Covid.
