I would tend to think a shotgun wouldn't make for as good a mass-killing weapon as modern automatic rifles. Presumably with a shotgun there would be time for people to get away between reloads, or fight back, and presumably it would pose less of a threat to officers considering engaging the suspect, as compared to modern automatic weapons...?

Of course. Because every person who supports guns being this prevalent has these childrens' blood on their hands. It's not exactly a complicated issue of moral responsibility. You guys are responsible for the outcomes of policies you push, and this was the statistically inevitable result, and everyone in the world knows it.

Perhaps you were cheering Beto's jackassery on?
I was horrified by Abbott's grandstanding with those people all standing behind him on stage. Someone needed to ring a bell and chant "shame, shame" until they all felt in their bones the pathetic callousness of their self-serving political grandstanding. I don't understand what can have been in their minds to stand on that stage as such immoral and disgusting political tools. Beto was absolutely right in calling them out, and it's shocking everyone else in the room didn't join him in it. The guy who shouted him down is going straight to hell if it exists. If Texans have any consciences whatsoever every single one of them they would vote Beto over Abbott.

I can't think of a single mass shooting in the US (in recent time, as in the last 50 years or so - I'm sure you could name a number that went on during the times of Al Capone, etc.) that has been committed using automatic rifles. About the closest you could get is Las Vegas with the janky modifications he made to try to simulate something closer to automatic fire.

Though I suspect in your ignorance you think that an AR-15 and the like is an 'automatic rifle' as most ignorant liberals do.

BTW the largest school shooting in US history was committed with a pair of simple handguns/pistols.

When the citizens of the town, including people who lost family members in the shooting, were interviewed, they didn't like Beto's narcissistic campaign grandstanding at all.

My reaction was that basically all the local LEOs who showed up should be fired, but then that leaves even *fewer* responders.

The problem is this. The only way to stop (or significantly reduce) gun violence is to get rid of guns. Look at Australia. They had a mass shooting and immediately banned most gun sales and instituted a buy-back program. I lived in Oz for a couple of years and it doesn't surprise me that people agreed to it. Australians tend to be very community conscious. They are much more ready to give up some rights for the good of everyone. Putting it another way, they valued the lives of the victims higher than their right to own guns.
That's because they are morons who are happy to accept fascism.

So, why not do it here? Simple, people in general here value their 2nd Amendment rights so highly that they are prepared to accept the collateral damage that results.
We would rather accept the alleged collateral damage of allowing ready access to guns than the collateral damage of abridging that right.

I've carried out a personal and obviously unscientific survey over the years. I pick people who are greatly in favor of gun control and ask them if they would support repealing the 2nd Amendment. The answer has been "no" in pretty much every case. Another thing. Have you noticed that Politicians who speak up in the wake of these disasters and demand more gun control always slip in something to the effect that they support 2nd Amendment rights. They know perfectly well that any politician that spoke out against the 2nd Amendment would be toast in short order.

So, gun lovers, no need to get all worried when these mass shootings occur, Nothing meaningful is going to be done. Just wait for it all to calm down. Until the next time, when it will all repeat.
There were at least as many guns per capita 50 years ago, and virtually no such atrocities. The solution is to try to fix what went wrong about society, not fix what was never a problem previously.

I can't imagine being one of those parents, watching the police do more to you and your fellow parents than they're willing to do to the person inside potentially murdering your kids while they stand around with their thumbs up their rectal orifices in between beating up distraught parents. Only thing I do know is I'd probably be in jail for assault on an officer by the end of that day if I had been there and that had been my kids inside.

Yeah, though given their 'response', it appears the town would be better off firing them all and then relying on a posse of parents while going to the effort to train a force of actual cops interested in actually doing the job they're supposed to do, and letting the parents take care of things in the interim!

                            • I've seen several reports on this so it sounds like it may be credible. Apparently the Border Patrol force that entered and ended up killing the suspect, did so after getting fed up with the local officials telling them not to go in and to wait. They waited at the request of the locals, and eventually got so fed up that they then made a unilateral decision to enter - it sounds as if the locals would have waited even longer with their thumbs up their butts if they had their way.

Border Patrol Agents Acted Unilaterally to Kill Uvalde Gunman After Local Cops Wouldn’t Act

An elite Customs and Border Protection unit killed a school shooter in Texas on Tuesday after agents became frustrated with inaction from local police, according to a report.

Nineteen children and two adults were murdered by an 18-year-old man at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Evidence has emerged throughout the week the city’s police department was derelict in its duty to end the massacre.

The Uvalde Police Department had 19 officers outside of a classroom door where the shooter was, yet they neglected to enter for about an hour.

They were waiting on a CPB BORTAC SWAT team, which had investigated a drug stash house near the border, Texas Monthly reported. After speaking with a border patrol official, the outlet noted,

The agents immediately responded, arriving at the school just before noon. Bortac (Border Patrol Tactical Unit) is CBP’s’s paramilitary force, an elite group of agents trained to exchange gunfire with cartels. Border Patrol agents not in the SWAT unit also rushed to the school, for more personal reasons: their own children were in the building.

                              […]

According to the CBP official, three Bortac agents engaged the shooter in gunfire — with one holding a shield — after entering Robb Elementary along with local and state law-enforcement officers. One Bortac agent was wounded, but not critically. The CBP official told Texas Monthly that it’s “unclear which bullet from which gun” struck the shooter and killed him.
Julia E. Ainsley with NBC News reported the elite squad did not coordinate with the Uvalde Police Department before the gunman was killed. Agents became frustrated at the department’s inaction, and acted unilaterally to take out the killer.

The suspect was killed after he was shot approximately 15 times. One of the BORTAC agents was injured when a bullet grazed his head.

It's becoming more and more clear why the local police have been trying the runaround since the gunman was killed.

EDIT: in addition the Border Patrol agents didn't understand why they were called yet told not to go in, whilst the local police's SWAT team had not done a thing:
