Hillary Clinton personally approved plan to share Trump-Russia allegation with the press in 2016, campaign manager says

(CNN)Hillary Clinton personally approved her campaign's plans in fall 2016 to share information with a reporter about an uncorroborated alleged server backchannel between Donald Trump and a top Russian bank, her former campaign manager testified Friday in federal court.

Robby Mook said he attended a meeting with other senior campaign officials where they learned about strange cyberactivity that suggested a relationship between the Trump Organization and Alfa Bank, which is based in Moscow. The group decided to share the information with a reporter, and Mook subsequently ran that decision by Clinton herself.

"We discussed it with Hillary," Mook said, later adding that "she agreed with the decision."

Opposition research, and suggesting negative stories about opponents to the press, are standard practice in elections. It's not "rigging" elections. Change your false thread title.

No the news is she manufactured a LIE then had her lawyer take it to the FBI. The FBI knew it was a lie but played along to spread the lie. Once the FBI got involved that gave the lie some validity and the media perpetuated lie along w Dems and FBI! They all knew it was a lie. That is using misinformation to influence the election.

Now there’s a catchy thread title.

Any particular reason why you cut off the article immediately before the next paragraph.
        .
A campaign staffer later passed the information to a reporter from Slate magazine, which the campaign hoped the reporter would "vet it out, and write what they believe is true," Mook said.

I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure that’s not what “rigging an election” means. That’s a phrase I associate with stuffing ballot boxes, repeat voting, manipulating vote counts, and any of the myriad other mechanisms laughed out of court something north of 60 times in the last election cycle.

Losing ain’t quite right either. Y’all do remember she lost in the electoral college despite winning the popular vote.

There is a real issue with pipelined stories but that’s typically tasked out to opinion columnists. It’s much easier to pay off a columnist to publish an ersatz article than it is to get a reporter to risk their job when their editor starts asking pointed questions.

This was very different. This wasn't digging up dirt on an opponent but fabricating it out of whole cloth like the Moscow hookers peeing on a bed story. This was designed to allow the FBI to use these news reports as evidence in their investigation -- heck, even to help justify the investigation itself. They were cited as corroborating what the FBI already "knew."

But don't worry, Hillary has repeatedly been shown to be above being held responsible for his criminal behavior (I've always wondered how much of that is the result of her having all of those confidential FBI files on everyone in Washington, allowing her to threaten to let out a lot of dirty secrets if she was ever prosecuted).

I'm always still in trouble again

            The two main claims here:
            .
            Hillary manufactured a lie.
The FBI deliberately spread the lie.

We’re kinda missing what lie you’re talking about. More details and less shouties would be helpful, I think.

Did you actually read the article. I mean, the whole article, including the part that contradicts your second main claim.
            .
Sussmann provided the technical internet data to a reporter from The New York Times, who was working on a story that the FBI spiked after learning about it from Sussmann.

Spiking a news story is not what I generally think of as the best way to spread a lie, but maybe that’s just me and you’ve got a take on this I didn’t consider.

Or maybe, and you could consider this idea too, you’re so heavily invested in this, emotionally, that shouting down facts you don’t much care for seems necessary. Maybe consider losing the shouty thing could take the focus off the personal aspects in this discussion, too.

Now for a little balance in what spreading false claims in the interest of trying to illegally influence the 2016 presidential election looks like to most other folks.

Russian troll farm, 13 suspects indicted in 2016 election interference
            .
The Justice Department’s special counsel announced a sweeping indictment Friday of a notorious Russian group of Internet trolls — charging 13 individuals and three companies with a long-running scheme to criminally interfere with the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

The Internet Research Agency, based in St. Petersburg, was named in the indictment as the hub of an ambitious effort to trick Americans online into following and promoting Russian-fed propaganda that pushed 2016 voters toward then-Republican candidate Donald Trump and away from Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

The indictment charges that the Russian efforts began in 2014, when three of the Russian conspirators visited 10 states, gathering intelligence about U.S. politics. Officials say that as the operation progressed, the suspects also engaged in extensive online conversations with Americans who became unwitting tools of the Russian efforts. The indictment does not accuse the Russian government of involvement in the scheme, nor does it claim that it succeeded in swaying any votes.

Pay special attention to the last clause of the last sentence of that last paragraph. That’s what balanced reporting looks like.

Durham is working very hard to sell the narrative that the FBI and other three letter agencies were innocent dupes of Hillary's campaign. A few low-level lackeys might wind up with convictions, but the top players in this scandal are certain to emerge unscathed.

Speculations on the communications between Trump org and a pair of servers in Moscow were based on metadata, so it’s unlikely we’ll ever know what was communicated. But this claim that the speculations were fabricated out of whole cloth doesn’t jibe with what’s known:

Was There a Connection Between a Russian Bank and the Trump Campaign?
                .
In June, 2016, after news broke that the Democratic National Committee had been hacked, a group of prominent computer scientists went on alert. Reports said that the infiltrators were probably Russian, which suggested to most members of the group that one of the country’s intelligence agencies had been involved. They speculated that if the Russians were hacking the Democrats they must be hacking the Republicans, too. “We thought there was no way in the world the Russians would just attack the Democrats,” one of the computer scientists, who asked to be identified only as Max, told me.

A Trump org server, mail1.trump-email.com, was communicating with Alfa bank.
                .
As Max and his colleagues searched D.N.S. logs for domains associated with Republican candidates, they were perplexed by what they encountered. “We went looking for fingerprints similar to what was on the D.N.C. computers, but we didn’t find what we were looking for,” Max told me. “We found something totally different—something unique.” In the small town of Lititz, Pennsylvania, a domain linked to the Trump Organization (mail1.trump-email.com) seemed to be behaving in a peculiar way. The server that housed the domain belonged to a company called Listrak, which mostly helped deliver mass-marketing e-mails: blasts of messages advertising spa treatments, Las Vegas weekends, and other enticements. Some Trump Organization domains sent mass e-mail blasts, but the one that Max and his colleagues spotted appeared not to be sending anything. At the same time, though, a very small group of companies seemed to be trying to communicate with it.

Examining records for the Trump domain, Max’s group discovered D.N.S. lookups from a pair of servers owned by Alfa Bank, one of the largest banks in Russia. Alfa Bank’s computers were looking up the address of the Trump server nearly every day. There were dozens of lookups on some days and far fewer on others, but the total number was notable: between May and September, Alfa Bank looked up the Trump Organization’s domain more than two thousand times. “We were watching this happen in real time—it was like watching an airplane fly by,” Max said. “And we thought, Why the hell is a Russian bank communicating with a server that belongs to the Trump Organization, and at such a rate?”

The New York Times spiked a story on the server connection at the FBI’s request.
                .
The F.B.I. officials asked Lichtblau to delay publishing his story, saying that releasing the news could jeopardize their investigation. As the story sat, Dean Baquet, the Times’ executive editor, decided that it would not suffice to report the existence of computer contacts without knowing their purpose. Lichtblau disagreed, arguing that his story contained important news: that the F.B.I. had opened a counterintelligence investigation into Russian contacts with Trump’s aides. “It was a really tense debate,” Baquet told me. “If I were the reporter, I would have wanted to run it, too. It felt like there was something there.” But, with the election looming, Baquet thought that he could not publish the story without being more confident in its conclusions.

The Lichtbau story eventually ran under an exculpatory headline.
                .
Over time, the F.B.I.’s interest in the possibility of an Alfa Bank connection seemed to wane. An agency official told Lichtblau that there could be an innocuous explanation for the computer traffic. Then, on October 30th, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid wrote a letter to James Comey, the director of the F.B.I., charging that the Bureau was withholding information about “close ties and coordination” between the Trump campaign and Russia. “We had a window,” Lichtblau said. His story about Alfa Bank ran the next day. But it bore only a modest resemblance to what he had filed. The headline— “investigating donald trump, f.b.i. sees no clear link to russia”—seemed to exonerate the Trump campaign. And, though the article mentioned the server, it omitted any reference to the computer scientists who had told Lichtblau that the Trump Organization and Alfa Bank might have been communicating. “We were saying that the investigation was basically over—and it was just beginning,” Lichtblau told me.

Investigating Donald Trump, F.B.I. Sees No Clear Link to Russia
                .
WASHINGTON — For much of the summer, the F.B.I. pursued a widening investigation into a Russian role in the American presidential campaign. Agents scrutinized advisers close to Donald J. Trump, looked for financial connections with Russian financial figures, searched for those involved in hacking the computers of Democrats, and even chased a lead — which they ultimately came to doubt — about a possible secret channel of email communication from the Trump Organization to a Russian bank.

Law enforcement officials say that none of the investigations so far have found any conclusive or direct link between Mr. Trump and the Russian government. And even the hacking into Democratic emails, F.B.I. and intelligence officials now believe, was aimed at disrupting the presidential election rather than electing Mr. Trump.

The DNS address to the Trump org server was changed by the Trump org in the interval between the Times communicating with Alfa bank and The Times speaking to Trump.
                .
That same day, Slate ran a story, by Franklin Foer, that made a detailed case for the possibility of a covert link between Alfa Bank and Trump. Foer’s report was based largely on information from a colleague of Max’s who called himself Tea Leaves. Foer quoted several outside experts; most said that there appeared to be no other plausible explanation for the data.

One remarkable aspect of Foer’s story involved the way that the Trump domain had stopped working. On September 21st, he wrote, the Times had delivered potential evidence of communications to B.G.R., a Washington lobbying firm that worked for Alfa Bank. Two days later, the Trump domain vanished from the Internet. (Technically, its “A record,” which translates the domain name to an I.P. address, was deleted. If the D.N.S. is a phone book, the domain name was effectively decoupled from its number.) For four days, the servers at Alfa Bank kept trying to look up the Trump domain. Then, ten minutes after the last attempt, one of them looked up another domain, which had been configured to lead to the same Trump Organization server.

Max’s group was surprised. The Trump domain had been shut down after the Times contacted Alfa Bank’s representatives—but before the newspaper contacted Trump. “That shows a human interaction,” Max concluded. “Certain actions leave fingerprints.” He reasoned that someone representing Alfa Bank had alerted the Trump Organization, which shut down the domain, set up another one, and then informed Alfa Bank of the new address.

While mail1.trump-email.com was originally set up for mass marketing emails, it was effectively a dedicated server communicating between Alfa Bank and Trump org at the time researchers were following and recording its DNS traffic.
                .
To establish a kind of control group, Jones’s team asked Max to capture the D.N.S. logs for the Denihan Hospitality Group—a hotel chain, similar in size to Trump’s, which was using Cendyn and Listrak to send marketing e-mails. In a sample spanning August and September, 2016, a Denihan domain received more than twenty thousand D.N.S. queries, from more than a thousand I.P. addresses. In the same period, the Trump domain had twenty-five hundred lookups, nearly all of them from Alfa Bank and Spectrum Health.

Spectrum Health’s inclusion among the restricted domains has been reported in fragmentary fashion, leaving an overarching context that goes begging. Dick DeVos is the chairman of the board for Spectrum Health. His wife is Betsy DeVos who¸served as Secretary of Education until joining the exodus following the storming of the Capitol, writing,
                .
“There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation.”

Betsy DeVos is the brother of Erik Prince who was investigated after …
                .
[…] an apparent effort to establish a back-channel line of communication between Moscow and President-elect Donald Trump, according to U.S., European and Arab officials.

Again, there’s plenty to fuel suspicion, but nothing probative about any of this. We have evidence of server links between Trump Org, Alfa Bank, and the DeVos family. We don’t know if those links were used. And if they were used, we don’t know how they were used. We don’t know if Erik DeVos was successful in his efforts. And if he was successful, whether subsequent reporting torpedoed any connections that might have been established.

This was the gang that couldn’t shoot straight, the team that let gossip columnist Michael Wolff wander around without a keeper for the first year until he left to become a gossipy author with the release of Fire and Fury. I don’t discount the possibility that every single one of these efforts face-planted shortly after take-off from Blunderville.

                But I’ve got my suspicions.

Personally, I believe the rigging happened when she deleted tens of thousands of emails from her server and the establishment press covered for her, like they covered for Biden's emails in 2020. The idea Comey influenced the election against her is absurd being that he also covered for her the whole time of the investigation. Unfortunately for her, she was such a heinous person it didn't work. It worked for Biden though, and 2020 is more definitive of election influence since polls about the acknowledgment of the laptop emails show this to be true.

Turns out Obama's campaign funneled almost a million dollars into it all:
Former president Barack Obama’s official campaign organization has directed nearly a million dollars to the same law firm that funneled money to Fusion GPS, the firm behind the infamous Steele dossier. Since April of 2016, Obama For America (OFA) has paid over $972,000 to Perkins Coie, records filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) show.

The Washington Post reported last week that Perkins Coie, an international law firm, was directed by both the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Hillary Clinton’s campaign to retain Fusion GPS in April of 2016 to dig up dirt on then-candidate Donald Trump. Fusion GPS then hired Christopher Steele, a former British spy, to compile a dossier of allegations that Trump and his campaign actively colluded with the Russian government during the 2016 election. Though many of the claims in the dossier have been directly refuted, none of the dossier’s allegations of collusion have been independently verified. Lawyers for Steele admitted in court filings last April that his work was not verified and was never meant to be made public.

OFA, Obama’s official campaign arm in 2016, paid nearly $800,000 to Perkins Coie in 2016 alone, according to FEC records. The first 2016 payments to Perkins Coie, classified only as “Legal Services,” were made April 25-26, 2016, and totaled $98,047. A second batch of payments, also classified as “Legal Services,” were disbursed to the law firm on September 29, 2016, and totaled exactly $700,000. Payments from OFA to Perkins Coie in 2017 totaled $174,725 through August 22, 2017.

FEC records as well as federal court records show that Marc Elias, the Perkins Coie lawyer whom the Washington Post reported was responsible for the payments to Fusion GPS on behalf of Clinton’s campaign and the DNC, also previously served as a counsel for OFA. In Shamblin v. Obama for America, a 2013 case in federal court in Florida, federal court records list Elias as simultaneously serving as lead attorney for both OFA and the DNC.

OFA, which managed Obama’s successful re-election campaign in 2012, retooled after that campaign to focus on enacting the president’s agenda during his final term in office. The group reorganized again after the 2016 election and planned to use its staff and resources to oppose President Donald Trump. During the entire 2016 campaign cycle, the group spent only $4.5 million, according to FEC records.

Federal records show that Hillary Clinton’s official campaign organization, Hillary For America, paid just under $5.1 million to Perkins Coie in 2016. The DNC paid nearly $5.4 million to the law firm in 2016.

The timing and nature of the payments to Perkins Coie by Obama’s official campaign arm raise significant questions about whether OFA was funding Fusion GPS, how much Obama and his team knew about the contents and provenance of the dossier long before its contents were made public, and whether the president or his government lieutenants knowingly used a partisan political document to justify official government actions targeting the president’s political opponents named in the dossier. According to the Washington Post, Fusion GPS was first retained by Perkins Coie on behalf of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in April of 2016.

At the same time that Hillary’s campaign, Obama’s campaign organization, and the DNC were simultaneously paying Perkins Coie, the spouse of one of Fusion GPS’s key employees was working directly for Obama in the West Wing. Shailagh Murray, a former Washington Post reporter-turned-political operative, was serving as a top communications adviser to Obama while the Obama administration was reportedly using information from the dossier to justify secret surveillance of Trump campaign staff. Murray is married to Neil King, a former Wall Street Journal reporter who was hired by Fusion GPS in December of 2016. While at the Wall Street Journal, King worked alongside Fusion GPS’s core team, even sharing bylines with Glenn Simpson, the Fusion GPS executive who personally hired Steele to probe Trump’s alleged Russia connections.

The importance of the dossier funded by Democrats, commissioned by Fusion GPS, and compiled by Steele, is difficult to overstate given that its contents were reportedly briefed to both President Obama and then-President-Elect Trump. The dossier was eventually published in full by BuzzFeed on January 10. On January 6, then-FBI Director James Comey had briefed Trump on the allegations in Steele’s dossier. Steele admitted in court filings that he had shopped much of the information in his dossier to numerous media outlets beginning in September of 2016.

Fusion GPS, which has been accused of illegally operating as an undisclosed agent of foreign governments, is currently facing multiple congressional inquiries into its activities and its clients. Bill Browder, whose attorney was allegedly murdered by Russian authorities after publicizing explosive allegations of Russian fraud and money laundering, alleged in congressional testimony last July that Fusion GPS was paid by Russians to undermine U.S. sanctions against the country. Late last week, Fusion GPS reportedly struck a deal with U.S. House investigators regarding a federal subpoena of the firm’s bank records. And in September, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), who serves as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, reportedly requested that the U.S. Treasury Department’s financial crimes unit provide his committee with all suspicious activity reports related to Fusion GPS’s bank transactions.

Following reports of Perkins Coie’s role in funneling money to Fusion GPS, the Campaign Legal Center, a non-partisan campaign finance watchdog, filed a complaint with the FEC alleging that the secret funding schemes violated federal campaign disclosure laws.

Fusion GPS is also facing a separate defamation suit in federal court related to claims in the dossier. That case, which was brought by three Russian businessmen who claim to have been libeled in the Steele dossier, was filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., in early October. Fusion GPS is yet to respond to those allegations in court.

I've long suspected that Hillary engineered this mostly in order to draw attention away from her missing emails and illegal server and that it grew well beyond anything she initially anticipated.

I remember warning Sam on this forum, who was a supporter of Hillary during her primaries against Bernie, that Hillary was a dangerous candidate to nominate because Comey was a Republican and could rig the election for his side by announcing a scandal about the emails a week before the election. Sam told me Comey was an upright person who would never do such a thing. The rest is history.

And yet Comey did his level best to run interference for her with that patently ridiculous claim that "no reasonable prosecutor" would bring charges against her, only for cable news networks to be flooded with former federal prosecutors over the next few days, including more than a few who were appointed by Democrats, to declare that they would have brought charges.

Comey was handed a pinless hand grenade that was all of Hillary's making that for anyone else would have led to an indictment. There was only so much he could do.

And that was in July, not a week before the election in October.

What he did was so transparent that he essentially became a pariah in his own agency. Even his close friends in the FBI avoided him which was what got him to send a CYA letter to Congress some 11 days before the election.

I think Trump figured Comey correctly, calling him a "showboat." His actions seemed less politically motivated than simply trying to make headlines for himself. Just an all-around sleazebag.

The glaring differences between this blog post and actual reporting are readily apparent.

In an actual news piece, every individual and organization mentioned from Fusion GPS to Obama would have been contacted for comment. Widely reported alternative explanations would have been explored. Glaring errors would have been removed in accord with consistently-maintained, independent editorial oversight. Crucial facts would not have been omitted. Perkins Coie was originally engaged to investigate Trump by his Republican opponents. Bill Browder was the subject of the Fusion GPS investigation he testified against. That investigation found him included among the tax scofflaws in the Panama Papers. Investigations into Carter Page began long before any association with the Trump campaign. The FBI found nothing useful in the Steele memos that had not already been confirmed independently …
