That is what art classes do. Mentioning the fact was not offered as an excuse, and these "alternative life choices" are part of the daily social environment for children and adolescents.
My post simply acknowledged that the report did not contain enough detail to determine whether lines had been crossed. Other articles about the incident that I have been reading lead to the conclusion that the lines were probably well and truly crossed.

Tell me, are you one of those who says they can spot a gay person at 10 paces? Unless they start flaunting their sexual preferences generally you can't tell who is gay and I daresay that small children who aren't even thinking about sex are likely even less likely to be able to tell.

The idea is simple and just common sense. You don't talk to young children -- especially if they are not your children -- about your sex life. If you just cannot control yourself and feel yourself compelled to share it with toddlers, then it is pretty obvious that you just are not suited for teaching.

The report is kind of scanty in detail, so maybe too much can be read into the bit that says:

Neither of the flags provides a place for cis-gender. So what kind of flags did the majority of the students choose?

It almost sounds like those were the two options that they had to choose from which if true is hardly their being able to express themselves.

According to the report she's a middle school teacher, which google says is ages in the 11-13 range. In my country sex education classes tend to start in this age range. US surveys show most people have their first sexual thoughts around age 11. So the 11-13 range seems the ideal age to start educating people about the basics of the different types of sexual attractions people can have, so the students can get an idea of how they fit into the world. Seems very age-appropriate.

"Toddlers"? The students under discussion in this thread are in the 11-13 age range.

It certainly does seem like US conservatives are on an anti-LGBT crusade at the moment, and it does seem like they want to get all LGBT teachers fired if they can. This seems to be partially simple hatred of LGBT people on their part, and partially projection on their part - they assume that since they want to indoctrinate students into conservativism that therefore any LGBT teachers must be trying to indoctrinate students to be LGBT (as if that were a thing). Hatred + stupidity, the usual conservative duo.
