  • Pansexual Teacher Fired...

How about a simple rule - you don't talk to kids about their sexuality or yours?

Florida middle school teacher blames 'Don't Say Gay' bill for being fired after she told students she is pansexual and got them to draw gay pride flag

I've heard liberals claim that much of the impetus for the 'don't say gay' bill is that bigots just want to fire LGBT teachers for their sexuality, and the bill is a way of getting around the ban on that. Stories like this make me think that might be true.

I've heard the right claim that liberals oppose the bill because they want adults to be able to talk about sexuality to little kids and tell them not to tell their parents they had those discussions, kind of like what pedophiles do. The fact you've had some liberals outwardly defending pedophilia makes me think that might be true.

Their sexuality? Why is she even speaking to children about her sexuality, and asking kids about theirs? I didn't even know my teachers' first name - never mind speaking about the joys of pansexuality...

According to the report she's a middle school teacher, which google says is ages in the 11-13 range. In my country sex education classes tend to start in this age range. US surveys show most people have their first sexual thoughts around age 11. So the 11-13 range seems the ideal age to start educating people about the basics of the different types of sexual attractions people can have, so the students can get an idea of how they fit into the world. Seems very age-appropriate.

The report is kind of scanty in detail, so maybe too much can be read into the bit that says:
Casey Scott encouraged her art students to express themselves through flags, with some drawing the rainbow gay pride flag and others choosing the light blue, pink and white stripes of the transgender flag.

Neither of the flags provides a place for cis-gender. So what kind of flags did the majority of the students choose?

This is not a sex education class, and she had them color gay pride flags - this is propaganda, it was all inappropriate.

Does it matter? I don't think drawing a flag in art class is newsworthy, unless it's the Nazi flag.

Not really. Drawing a brightly colored flag is mostly just a fun exercise in using bright colors. Even if the teacher talks about sexuality it's not propaganda, just education.

Again - maybe reading too much into it, but asking students to express themselves by drawing flags - and "express themselves" using a selection basis that excludes most of the students??

I haven't seen any evidence that those were their only two options. Perhaps the express themselves comment was about making their own modifications to the designs, who knows, you're pretty much speculating in the complete absence of evidence here.

But let me be clear: Just as an art teacher can stick fruit bowl in front of the class and ask students to draw it, there is equally nothing wrong with sticking a rainbow flag in front of the class and asking the students to draw it. Both give the students opportunities to practice and learn their art skills. Rainbow flags are acceptable and topical, they're not morally questionable items in the way Nazi flags are.

Perhaps you should just be glad that the students weren't asked to draw a naked person, given that was what so much historical Western art was about? That would be very "conservative" in the "traditionalist" sense.

As I noted in both of my posts, the report is not explicit (enough to draw a firm conclusion). It does indicate, however, that there were only two options. Of course, allowance must be made for the possibility of selective journalistic tampering. "Some did one some did another" indicates the lack of a third option, but it doesn't declare that lack.

It has to be wondered (assuming that there were but two options) whether such generosity of spirit would extend to students (particularly by the teacher) who drew something outside the assigned parameters, or a picture of both flags in flames, or in some other way "expressed themselves" by indicating protest. .

ah yes: I shouldn't have been surprised that complaints were raised about the Mars bar ad, but I was surprised nonetheless.

The censors deemed the video worthy of a G rating, which I found reasonable (and the ad is amusing).

Art classes often, as they should, push the envelope. The problem is that the report doesn't have enough information to indicate whether this teacher was simply pushing the envelope or engaging in an indoctrination exercise.
