Pence condemns Republican Putin ‘apologists’ in speech to RNC donors

Former Vice President Mike Pence on Friday condemned Republican “apologists” who have used positive language to describe Russian President Vladimir Putin amid his invasion of Ukraine, according to a source who was in the room as Pence spoke to top GOP donors.

“There is no room in this party for apologists for Putin. There is only room for champions of freedom,” Pence said. The line received applause from donors who were gathered for a Republican National Committee retreat in New Orleans, the source said. The event was closed to the press.

Pence’s speech came just days after former President Donald Trump described Putin as “genius” and “savvy” for launching a full-scale invasion in Ukraine, where civilian casualties continue to pile up despite global condemnation of the Russian leader’s actions.

He was feckless as head of the Covid Task Force, he was dishonest in claiming Bad Orange Man wanted him to "overturn" the election, and he's dishonest in calling people "apologists" for Pootie.

How about facts and maybe a coherent response without the emotions.

Pence has turned into a bit of a sanctimonious moron. There are no "Putin apologists" in the Republican party.

Trump last week said on a radio show that Putin's decision to unilaterally declare portions of eastern Ukraine as independent republics was "pretty savvy" and "genius." Putin's recognition of those territories preceded a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier this year also referred to Putin as a "talented statesman" with "lots of gifts."

And Tucker Carlson, an influential Fox News host, questioned why Americans should hate Putin and described Ukraine as a country essentially managed by the U.S. government.

Those comments have drawn blowback from many in the Republican Party, especially as Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukraine and indiscriminately fired missiles at civilian centers and a nuclear facility, raising the risk of catastrophic casualties.

Trump shifted his tone earlier this week, calling Russia's invasion of Ukraine "a holocaust."

Stating the fact that Putin's decision to attack Ukraine at this particular time was "pretty savvy" is not an apologetic. Neither is acknowledging that Putin is a "talented statesman". The definition of apologist is "one who speaks or writes in defense of someone or something". Now show me where any Republican has defended Putin's actions.

Not that context ever matters at all, but Tucker's remarks about hating Pootie were in the setting of what Pootie has or has not done to harm Americans. His implication -- and I tend to agree -- is that if we're going to "hate" Pootie, we should also hate those who have done things to directly harm America, such as impose lockdowns, crush the energy sector, etc.

Trump's remarks were ill-conceived and Pence is seeking to distance himself. I really don't blame him.

Distancing himself from Trump is fine. Lying by calling Trump a "Putin apologist" is not.

I consider myself more conservative than Republican these days. The Republican party isn't what it used to be.

He’s probably also trying to get revenge for Trump vilifying him as a coward for not overturning the election.

Lying is okay only when Trump does it.

Please specify when it was last great. You’ll have to do some heavy digging and rationalizing given the clowns it’s churned out going back to Nixon.

Where did he call Trump a Putin apologist? I have looked at the article and see no statement of such. He made a general statement against "Putin apologists" but didn't specifically call out Trump.
