  • Attempted Assassination of Louisville Mayoral Candidate, Shot Grazed His Shirt

Democrat Candidate Craig Greenburg, running for Mayor's office in Louisville had a close call yesterday when a man entered his campaign office and attempted to shoot him. At least one bullet grazed his sweater/shirt.

A person fired multiple gunshots at Louisville Democratic mayoral candidate Craig Greenberg in his campaign office Monday morning, missing him but grazing his clothing.

"My team is blessed no one was physically injured today," Greenberg said in a late afternoon press conference. "... Despite one bullet coming so close that it grazed my sweater and my shirt, no one was physically harmed and we're extraordinarily grateful for our safety."

Louisville Metro Police Chief Erika Shields said at an earlier press conference that a person she didn't identify had been detained but no motive was known

"We also have no reason to believe at this time that this individual was acting anything but alone," she said.

Police said they responded to the four-story Butchertown Market building, where Greenberg's campaign office is located, about 10:15 a.m. after receiving reports of "an active aggressor."

They said multiple shots were fired and it was determined that Greenberg's office had been targeted, so officers evacuated Greenberg and his staff, LMPD said in a statement.

Greenberg, recounting the events of the shooting to media, said he and four staff members were gathered for a meeting when a man walked in, "pulled out a gun, aimed directly at me and began shooting."

A staff member closest to the door managed to close it, Greenberg said, and others barricaded it with tables and desks.

"I'm very fortunate to have a great team of great people who responded in that way," he said.

Greenberg thanked law enforcement for their quick response and declined to comment on any details of the investigation, including if he recognized the suspect

Besides police, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was called to the scene.

Shields said the police would be investigating the incident "from all angles" to determine a motive. She said it was unknown if the incident could be related to politics, the fact that Greenberg is Jewish or if the person could have had mental issues.

"We have to really keep an open mind and really just be diligent in taking care of our community," she said.

Matt Goldberg, director of community relations for the Jewish Federation of Louisville, noted that Greenberg is an "active member" of the local Jewish community but was cautious about assigning a motive.

"I think until we hear from LMPD or any of the investigators ... that he was specifically targeted because he was Jewish, there isn't anything specifically we're doing," he said of the Jewish community.

"You don't expect to see anything like that in Louisville or anywhere, but to see it for someone you know is very, very frightening," he said. "We're thinking about his family of course and his friends and the people on his campaign."

Other mayoral candidates and local politicians swiftly commented on the shooting and offered support to Greenberg and his team.

Philip Molestina, a Republican running for mayor, said the news that Greenberg was targeted in a shooting is surreal but the most important thing is the safety of Greenberg and everyone else at his office.

This shooting, he said, "makes it even more important for us to have a safe city and work, all of us together, to make sure that happens regardless of political affiliations or anything else."

David Nicholson, a Democrat in the race, said the news of the shooting led him to take extra security precautions.

"I was immediately notified of the shooting by LMPD, and I have since spoken with Mr. Greenberg," Nicholson said. "While our campaign received no prior threats or indication of danger, my campaign has taken the necessary precautions to protect my family, campaign team and myself."

In an afternoon press conference, Gov. Andy Beshear said he's known Greenberg for 15 years and called the shooting "scary and horrible."

"I know what it's like to have the threats, but this is a step above and beyond that," he said. "And in the end, people will say what does it do the mayor's race? Who cares. I mean, this is a person that almost lost their life, who's going to be hugging their family tonight, and that's the most important thing."

Greenberg launched his campaign for mayor last year and quickly built up a big fundraising lead (which he has since maintained)in the race to succeed outgoing Mayor Greg Fischer.

Before he got into politics, he worked as CEO of 21c Museum Hotels and also served on the University of Louisville board of trustees for a couple of years. He became a co-owner of Ohio Valley Wrestling alongside Kentucky Sports Radio founder Matt Jones last year and started a firm, Greenberg Group, that's centered on urban revitalization projects.

Greenberg has said public safety would be his No. 1 priority if he's elected mayor this year.

He released his public safety plan for Louisville last month, which called for "fully" funding and staffing a "community-oriented police force" and expanding mental health treatment, among other things.

"It's not lost on me that the violence my staff and I experienced today is far too common in our city," Greenberg said Monday.

"Too many local families have experienced the trauma of gun violence. Too many in Louisville were not as blessed as my team and I were today to survive. Clearly, much more work needs to be done to end this senseless gun violence and make Louisville a safer place for everyone."

So who could it be? Some dastardly conservative who wants him out of the race? An evil alt-right crazy who hates Jews like Greenberg (who is very active in the Jewish commmunity in the city)?

Oh, wait, nevermind, turns out it's a well known local black activist named Quintez Brown, who was an outspoken local member of BLM, a gun control advocate (lol), and had risen to prominence in the wake of the Breonna Taylor shooting as a social justice activist, who wrote columns for the local paper in that capacity, and who even made it onto MSNBC with Joy Reid.

(actually, given the disproportionate amount of anti-semitic crimes done by african-americans, maybe that 'hates jews' idea isn't so farfetched)

Quintez Brown has been arrested and the MSM suddenly lost all interest in the story when they discovered that there was no way to exploit it because he is a radical leftist and (get this) a staunch advocate for gun control.

When the shooter was unknown and they could imply (and hope) the shooter must have been a conservative, it got a good deal of coverage but now the story has been dropped like a hot potato. That this was what the MSM was indeed doing is evident by the tweet from Daily Beast's Cliff Schecter which Andy Ngo responded to.

Do you think all black people should be held responsible for this person’s behavior?

Yep, he was an oped columnist for 'social justice' issues, IIRC. Also wrote an article on how we should have gun control..... Guess he was giving us a hint

Brown, a former intern and editorial columnist for The Courier Journal, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday, where a judge set his bail at $100,000.

Police have not offered a motive for the shooting, but speculation quickly swirled on social media, linking Brown's arrest to his activism and affiliation with racial justice organizations.

People who know Brown say jumping to conclusions without more information is "irresponsible," and they expressed concern about his mental state.

Brown disappeared for about two weeks last year. He was found on a park bench in New York, said Rob Eggert, his attorney.

"This is not a hate crime — it is a mental health case," Eggert told The Courier Journal on Tuesday.

$100,000 bail? That seems low for a murder attempt.

Apparently Brown had been featured by the Obama Foundation as a “rising face,” and participated in his “My Brother’s Keeper” program, becoming one of just 22 students nationwide invited to the inaugural gathering of the "My Brother’s Keeper Alliance."

He was also on MSNBC's A.M. Joy with Joy Reid promoting what he declared was "common-sense gun reform."

And, he appears to have been a friend of Charles Booker (who ran for Senate in 2020 and is doing so again in 2021)

I can see why the MSM suddenly lost all interest in him. He doesn't fit the narrative they were seeking to push.
