Also posted in the Vaccine thread, then realized it's probably more appropriate here:

      Masks useless or worse.

      (Also from The Blaze.)

      Cloth masks useless.

N95 things are NOT masks, they are RESPIRATORS, and are not appropriate for this purpose.

Last night the local news had a story on this - pretty much admitting cloth masks are useless.

Think of the MILLIONS and millions of cloth masks that were sold, giving the false sense of security that they actually protect you.

And so if and when the next variant wave and fearmongering campaign come along, we'll now be forced to wear medical masks. That's great.

Even though Fartchi said those should NOT be worn by the general public.

Many people have the wrong impression that a mask is useless unless it makes you invulnerable to the virus. Cloth masks are not useless, they are just less useful than medical grade masks. And of course they are less useful than they would be if everyone would wear them.

                  I never thought that.

WOW, I wish I had thought of that!

So, why do you think there's this "new push" away from cloth masks toward N95 / KN95? Must be a pretty significant difference, no?

Ah, yes, the old "It's better than nothing" rationalization. And this is where the false sense of security comes in, because cloth masks, and even medical grade, don't significantly impede viruses. While medical grade masks do, in theory, have a better chance of stopping viruses than ordinary cloth, neither material stops enough of the virus to meaningfully arrest transmission. This was common knowledge for years, supported by multiple studies, but then that "settled science" was arbitrarily kicked to the curb when the China flu reared its ugly head.

Is a "medical mask" different from an n95 mask?

The link I posted argued that n95 masks are plainly unsuitable. They are not "masks," they require training for proper use, they require the user be clean-shaven, they are not intended for hours-long use. When improperly fitted, they are worse than plain ol' cloth masks.

A basic medical mask is those dinky blue accordion masks you see in doctor shows.

But yeah N95s are basically useless to most who wear them as well because most have no clue how to properly fit them nor have the correct facial hair to allow a proper fit.

If those people thought that a mask provided them with significant protection, yes. (Before you pounce on that, let me point out that what's not significant protection for an individual can make a significant difference in the number of people dying if enough people use it.)

WOW, I wish I had thought of that!

When properly fitted, the N95/KN95 masks provide much better protection. But I haven't yet found one that fits me well. I think a better option in general would be a surgical mask with brace.

As for why the "new push", I think it's because the administration is under pressure to "do something". Obviously, the most effective thing to do would be to get everyone vaccinated, but that isn't within their power. Getting everyone to wear more effective masks would be good, but that isn't within their power, either. Providing people with free N95 masks and test kits is within their power, for what little good it will do.

He said that when there was a shortage of medical masks, very little evidence of community spread of the virus, and no real evidence of asymptomatic transmission.

Yes, the "necessary lie" --- what else are they lying about because it's "necessary"?

And the "experts" are STILL trying to figure this out, along with it being HIGLY politicized from all directions.

He wasn't lying. There really was a shortage of medical masks at the time.

No, there is now pretty good evidence of both community spread and asymptomatic (when understood to include presymptomatic) transmission.
