CDC Finally Admits Cloth Masks Were Always Political Theater

Mask mandates have always been more about showing compliance than keeping people safe, and the CDC’s latest embarrassing disclosure further proves it.

For two years now, to walk into a grocery store barefaced has been to risk soliciting dirty stares, at least in some parts of the country. But walk in with your face covered by a thin piece of fabric, preferably with some vaguely woke slogan, that you got overpriced on Etsy? You’re golden.

Masks have been obvious political theater from the start, back when Anthony Fauci et al. promised we didn’t need them and then flip-flopped and promised we did. But when sensible observers tried to point that out, the Big Tech-media cabal gleefully slapped them with “fact” “checks.”

When The Federalist ran the headline “Many Studies Find That Cloth Masks Do Not Stop Viruses Like COVID” in November 2020, Lead Stories attempted to “fact-check” the piece, slapping a red “masks work” label over a screenshot of the original article.

The “fact-check” even cited data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about the effectiveness of masks against COVID-19, where the CDC insisted, “Cloth masks not only effectively block most large droplets (i.e., 20-30 microns and larger), but they can also block the exhalation of fine droplets and particles,” and “cloth mask materials can also reduce wearers’ exposure to infectious droplets through filtration.”

Yet the same CDC quietly admitted on Friday that the thin cloth masks the agency and its corporate media allies spent the last two years cheering actually “provide the least protection” against COVID-19. It was “the first time the C.D.C. has explicitly addressed” the relative ineffectiveness of cloth masks, according to The New York Times.

The agency’s concession comes on the heels of admissions from people like CNN’s Leana Wen that “cloth masks are not appropriate for this pandemic.”

This latest reversal in a long line of trust-eroding flip-flops means a victory lap is well deserved by people like Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul, who was censored by Google-owned YouTube for suggesting that cloth masks don’t work and N95s do. It’s also deserved by everyone who refused to hang a piece of useless fabric from their ears at every restaurant, store, and airport for the sole purpose of fitting into the popular political narrative.

It was never a secret that cloth masks are not as effective as medical grade masks.

Question is, will they now mandate medical masks?

In this case, "not as effective" means "not effective". Even medical grade masks don't stop viruses because they're not designed to. Their main purpose is to stop large saliva droplets from hitting a patient, but viruses are much smaller than the weave of the material, so most viruses pass through. If I remember correctly, one study which had those infected with the China flu cough into a petri found that there was little if any difference between ordinary cloth and N95 masks.

The article and its premise are misleading anti cdc, anti mask propaganda. This is the actual statement, from the new York times article:

          Source: nyt

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday clarified its stance on various kinds of masks, acknowledging that the cloth masks frequently worn by Americans do not offer as much protection as surgical masks or respirators.

I'm not sure I know anyone that did not understand that n95 was the gold standard for protection, and that cloth masks only help prevent spread by reducing airborne virus count in closer areas, not by protecting each individual person at a high rate.

          Why the announcement?

The extremely high transmissability of omicron makes the statistical reduction in virus count offered by the majority wearing cloth masks insufficient against a virus that requires such a low count to infect people..

It is not that cloth masks never were effective if worn, it is that the virus has changed and the protection they offer is no longer statistically significant.

Chalk up yet another confirmed "conspiracy theory" regarding the Chicom coronavirus.

I think this was evident not only from Fauci's flipflopping on the issue but by how all those pushing them were/are constantly being caught not wearing them even when in close proximity to other people. Old Joe passes an EO requiring all government employees to wear them while on government property but almost never has one on (and when he does, takes it off to speak and then forgets it).

Not. More paranoia. I've followed this in the journals rather closely. It is as I described it in my post. Ill agree that it might be a bit hard to understand why the guidance has shifted over time if one can not understand the parameters upon which the guidance is based - but that is not you. You are more than capable of understanding it if you want to.

Nothing has changed. The fact is, the protection offered by masks -- even medical grade -- against viruses has never been statistically significant. The "gold standard" N95 masks can trap 95% of particles as small as 0.3 microns in size, which sounds great until you realize that the China flu virus is one-third the size of that and can easily pass through. Furthermore, studies have shown that when infected individuals cough, there is effectively no difference between ordinary cloth and N95 masks.

One of the most COSISTENT factors about our government's handling of this pandemic is inconsistency, confusion, and control.

I really wish there were one source where you can go to get straight up no nonsense honest answers devoid of politics. That the pro-panic crowd makes every possible excuse for all this confusion is downright befuddling.

                      Watch Fauci on 60 Minutes.

                      From March 8, 2021

Anthony Fauci: The masks are important for someone who's infected to prevent them from infecting someone else. Now when you see people and look at the films in China and South Korea whatever, everyone's wearing a mask. Right now, in the United States, people should not be walking around with masks.

Jonathan LaPook: You're sure of it? Because people are listening really close to this.

Anthony Fauci: Right now people shouldn't be walking. There's no reason to be walking around with a mask. When you're in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better. And it might even block a droplet, but it's not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is. And often there are unintended consequences. People keep fiddling with the mask and keep touching their face.

Notice how he even double-downed after the host asked "You sure of it?"

And there's also the blatant masks for thee but not for me among those issuing the mandates which indicates they don't believe they work.

And the Pandemic Panic People justify this as 'a noble lie' to prevent a shortage of masks among health care professionals. If you cock your head to one side, drink a half bottle of Nyquil, and slam your eyes shut, you can actually hear Fauci say that.

As I have said to you in the past: electrostatics.n95's do trap the virus, otherwise the majority of medical professionals working covid units would not have had any protection. That is what they wear.

'Studies have shown': feel free to post links to those studies. Although logically if a cough breaks the seal, then what is behind the mask can get out. Which means that if you are sick and wearing the mask to protect others, you need to leave the space to cough. Mostly common sense for most of us.. Wrt to protecting from incoming virus, coughing would induce a positive pressure that would prevent the virus from entering during the moment the seal was broken.

The actual history is that the transition was as follows:

                            1) during the earliest phases community transmission was negligible. The chances of catching the virus outside a medical setting was very low, but there was a ppe shortage for those in hospitals, so the general public was encourage NOT to buy up supplies of n95 masks.

                            2) studies were done to investigate just what lesser masks could do if worn by a large percentage of the public. It was also understood that at the time the majority transmission was occurring in large droplets. it was thought at the time the virus had not yet evolved the capacity to survive outside a droplet and airborne. those studies showed a significant reduction in droplet expulsion, which meant that if a large proportion of the public wore surgical or even cloth masks in public, it could help reduce community spread.

                            3) over time the virus evolved more effective ways of spreading, gradually reducing the effectiveness of lesser quality masks. Now we have omicron, which is so contagious that anything less than a multi-ply surgical mask doesn't provide sufficient filtration to be statistically significant.

If it were not for the continued sarcastic and ignorant propagation of the sort of nonsense represented by many of the comments in this thread and the article that prompted it, we would all have been so much better off. Mask resistance and ignorant bickering and complaining as the guidance changed to match the changing environment has killed many people.
