The government did open an office for receiving money from all those liberals who complain that their taxes are too low like Warren Buffet, or think that paying higher taxes is patriotic like old Joe.

It closed. It seems, much like the claims they're moving to Canada or Europe if a Republican is president, the liberals making such statements were none too eager to put their words into action.

This might have been the only time the federal government closed down something they established (there are still agencies in existence meant to assist in the fighting of the Civil War and no their instructions haven't changed).

How do I make a contribution to the U.S. government?

Citizens who wish to make a general donation to the U.S. government may send contributions to a specific account called "Gifts to the United States."

This account was established in 1843 to accept gifts, such as bequests, from individuals wishing to express their patriotism to the United States. Money deposited into this account is for general use by the federal government and can be available for budget needs.

These contributions are considered an unconditional gift to the government. Citizens can make financial donations electronically through pay.gov or in paper form.
      • At pay.gov, you can contribute online from your bank account (ACH), PayPal, debit or credit card.
      • You can write a check or money order, payable to the United States Treasury, and in the memo section notate that it's a gift to the United States. Mail your check or money order to the address below.

Any tax-related questions regarding these contributions should be directed to the Internal Revenue Service at 800-829-1040.

Huh. I distinctly recall reading that it had been closed down.

        • On the general subject of donating to the Government ....

It's a nice thing to do I guess, and I don't get this "virtue signalling", perhaps someone can explain. So far it looks like something said to devalue the gift ... "Yes, you gave me $1000 to get me out of a financial hole, but I'm not going to thank you because you only did it to look good".

Nice yes, but not a very good way to fund the Government. From the giver's point of view, without a significant number of others are doing the same it's not going to do much good in view of the huge sums needed, and nobody can be sure of what others will do. From the Government point of view, they're not going to refuse it of course, but how do they budget for such a wildly variable income that is completely out of their control.

If a company is doing badly, it doesn't put up a sign in shops next to their goods saying "please pay more that the posted price". No, they increase the prices for everyone.

Look at old Joe's declaration that paying higher taxes is patriotic (while apparently still owing $400,000 in back taxes). Doing so for that reason would be virtue signaling.

But this was more of a case of a few consumers complaining that the company wasn't charging them enough. In that case they can always pay more if they want, instead of trying to raise the prices for everyone who are just fine with not paying more.

I think what Alien is saying is that if those few who are willing to pay more think there is a problem that can only be solved if everybody pays more, then everybody should be forced to pay more.

It wasn't just Joe -- other Democrats have made "paying taxes" something that establishes your degree of patriotism.

Even Manchin was on that train back when.

No. I was suggesting that relying on voluntary donors was not a good (that's effective not moral) way to increase tax income. Nothing about who thinks there is a problem or who wants to pay and who doesn't.

But this was more about a remedy for folks who thought that they had been undertaxed.

You just HAD to bring it back on topic. What's wrong with you?
