  • Sotomayor and Covid

Has anyone else seen anything about the abysmally low level of knowledge that SCOTUS Justice Sonia Sotomayor displayed regarding the Chicom coronavirus during oral arguments about the vaccine mandates last week?

The Big 3 networks didn't utter a word about it although NBC did provide a soundbite from her. Stunningly, in sharp contrast Jake Tapper of CNN called out her woeful ignorance out -- and with graphics. He flat out stated that

"I heard assertions made by the Supreme Court justices today that were simply false. One example, Justice Sotomayor said, quote, ‘we have over 100,000 children which we've never had before in serious condition and many on ventilators.’ That's just not true."

    43e4723e-e995-4713-acd7-74d0ee332e91.jpg
Not even 5000 much less 100,000 hospitalized

The network's SCOTUS correspondent, Joan Biskupic, worked hard trying to spin Sotomayor's grossly inaccurate statements which led to Tapper sneering "Yeah, facts are important, though. Especially in the U.S. Supreme Court."

Even the fact checkers at the WaPo couldn't spin this away, declaring

"That’s wildly incorrect, assuming she is referring to hospitalizations, given the reference to ventilators. According to HHS data, as of Jan. 8 there are about 5,000 children hospitalized in a pediatric bed, either with suspected covid or a confirmed laboratory test. This figure includes patients in observation beds. So Sotomayor’s number is at least 20 times higher than reality, even before you determine how many are in “serious condition.”"

They added that during the course of the entire pandemic there hasn't even been 100,000 children hospitalized. The paper ended up giving her 4 Pinocchios (their worst rating)

Aside from wildly misstating the number of children hospitalized with Covid by more than a factor of 20, Sotomayor also claimed that the Omicron variant is just as deadly as the Delta strain in spite of all the evidence that clearly shows otherwise.

"Those numbers show that Omicron is as deadly and causes as much serious disease in the unvaccinated as Delta did."

At what point does her weapon's grade ignorance on this matter require that she recuse herself?

I'm always still in trouble again

That's the thing about misinformation. Those who claim to care about it, only care about it if it goes against their position. If the misinformation supports their position, they don't really care. Look at the comment Starlight made on it. He came up with about 3-4 reasons why it didn't matter and was no big deal. I doubt any of his excuses would fly if the misinformation was about covid being safer than it is.

That seems to go back to CNN's SCOTUS correspondent, Joan Biskupic's attempt to spin this when she said

"...she is not so much speaking to her colleagues. She's not so much trying to persuade them. She's speaking beyond the walls the court. Usually it's Justices Breyer and Kagan who try to be more persuasive to their fellow colleagues with the arguments they're making and the questions they're asking."

That misinformation wasn't meant for the other justices but rather to be circulated among the public at large. This suggests that Sotomayor isn't stupid but is willfully and deliberately spreading what she knows were lies.

I'm always still in trouble again

Yep! And as fauci himself stated a good portion of children hospitalizations are incidental ones where kids went to the hospital (where all are tested no matter what they're there for) for something else like a broken bone, etc., and are counted as a covid hospitalization even if they have mild or no symptoms.

Well, misinformation on COVID from 'authorities' such as Sotomayor and Fauci, the FDA and the CDC is dangerous. Assuming that all their beliefs are correct, and COVID is (was) as dangerous as they tell us, then any misinformation from them (a) gives ammunition to the conspiracy nuts - they can say "See? They're lying to us about X, so don't believe them on Y". and (b) damages their credibility with normal people 'So should we wear facemasks / get a booster / vaccinate our kids / believe the vaccine is safe?' etc etc

The fact she's dumb doesn't surprise me, though I did expect her to at least try and get some facts right considering the weight of her decision making. What was really telling to me (though not really surprising either) was Walensky's attempted cover for her on national TV for obvious partisan reasons. Getting facts like so wrong, you'd think a scientist like Walensky would be up-in-arms about that type of misinformation.

And Ginsburg was intelligent as well. But Sotomayor...

Has she ever written the majority opinion on any of the cases before the SCOTUS, or has that always been entrusted to someone else? Or does she have a noted quote or opinion that gets discussed in any law classes.

Do you have anything at all to say about Sotomayor's demonstrated moronic display of ignorance?

If you want to discuss the deplorable record of the supposed fact checkers (hence the remark it wasn't something even they could spin away), please start your own thread juvie

The fact checkers were brought up by the o/p. That’d be you. If you didn’t want them defended in this thread, you should have started another one for your bashing. And despite your oxymoronic claim the fact checkers you’re citing can’t be trusted, I’m perfectly satisfied with their work, as you’d be, if you were being honest, with yourself at least.
