  • George Floyd painting in Catholic university

    https://www.dailysignal.com/2021/11/...washington-dc/

    • A painting depicting George Floyd as Jesus Christ hangs in two locations at The Catholic University of America, The Daily Signal has learned.
    • The artist repeatedly has indicated that his painting depicts both Floyd and Jesus.
    • “It is just another symptom of the liberalization and secularization of our campus,” a junior at Catholic University tells The Daily Signal.

Paintings depicting George Floyd as Jesus Christ hang in both The Catholic University of America’s campus ministry office and its law school, The Daily Signal has learned.

Catholic University appeared to shrug off responsibility for the painting Monday, telling The Daily Signal that artist Kelly Latimore’s painting “Mama” depicts “the Virgin Mary supporting the body of the dead Christ”—although the artist has indicated repeatedly that his painting depicts both Floyd and Jesus.

“You can identify Jesus by the marks in the halo,” said Karna Lozoya, vice president for university communications. Lozoya would not further address the matter with The Daily Signal.

“The icon has no place at The Catholic University of America; it is blasphemous and an offense to the Catholic faith, but it is not surprising at all that it was put there,” a junior at Catholic University told The Daily Signal in an email. “It is just another symptom of the liberalization and secularization of our campus.”

“There are many students, faculty, and staff who are concerned about this, but there is nothing we can do,” added the student, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of reprisal from the university administration. “And if we sound the alarm, we will be labeled racists.”

Following publication of this report, the Catholic University chapter of Young Americans for Freedom started a petition to remove the painting from the two locations.

“As students at The Catholic University of America, we believe that it is extremely grave that our university, the official university of the Catholic Church in North America, would cast another in the image of our Lord in this way, particularly for political purposes,” reads the petition, which had garnered over 230 signatures as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.

“No political or social cause ever justifies depicting another in the place of Jesus Christ,” the petition adds.

    Wow.

    Another Catholic mess.

        To illustrate what you're referencing:

It would appear that Floyd is a sainted martyr.

I find it very interesting that the students are the ones who object to this.

How much longer is the Catholic Church going to pretend it's Christian?
Some may call me foolish, and some may call me odd

A comment by one of the senior students quoted in the article really says it all:

"Jared Jagiello, a student senator representing the university’s School of Architecture and Planning, told The Daily Signal that “nobody should be portrayed as Jesus except” Jesus himself."

As we have no idea what the original Galilean Jew may have looked like, perhaps no iconography should be permitted, including any portrayals in religious dramas.

Interestingly the earliest references to his appearances describe him as being someone who wasn't much to look at. Both Tertullian and and Irenaeus describe him as being rather homely. So do a number of noncanonical Christian works. One thing that seems to be repeated by nearly all was that he was short. The anti-Christian philosopher Celsus called him "short and ugly" and I don't recall Origen contradicting that in his response to him.

Whether or not these are accurate is obviously up for debate but it is interesting that they don't match up anywhere close to modern depictions.

Given the respective dates for both men their observations are indeed very much "up for debate".

"both men"? Four were named. Although the same could be said wrt any of them.

The most likely description that could be derived from Biblical accounts would be "nondescript, generic Jew," who happened to have a particularly expensive cloak.

Some have tried to gain insight by using a few verses in Revelation but...
