WARNING TO THE EASILY OFFENDED THE LINK CONTAINS AN IMAGE OF A STYLISED NUDE FEMALE FIGURE

https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2018...ographic]Cases of art censorship on Facebook continue to surface. The latest work deemed “pornographic” is the 30,000 year-old nude statue famously known as the Venus of Willendorf, part of the Naturhistorisches Museum (NHM) collection in Vienna. An image of the work posted on Facebook by Laura Ghianda, a self-described “artivist”, was removed as inappropriate content despite four attempts to appeal the decision.

The early Stone Age statue, which depicts a voluptuous woman with prominent labia, was discovered in Austria in 1908 and is famed for its detailed carving and realism. Ghianda’s post denouncing Facebook’s censorship in December last year was shared over 7,000 times.

A case on Facebook’s censorship of art was heard in a Paris court earlier this month. Frédéric Durand-Baïssas, a French teacher, has been trying to sue the social media giant since 2011 for closing his account after he posted a photograph of Gustave Courbet’s 1866 painting L’Origine du monde (Origin of the World), a realistic depiction of a woman’s genitals. Despite Facebook changing its policy on nudity to allow “photographs of paintings, sculptures, and other art that depicts nude figures”, instances of art censorship persist.

The NHM reacted to Ghianda’s Facebook post in January, requesting that Facebook allow the Venus to remain naked. “There has never been a complaint by visitors concerning the nakedness of the figurine,” says Christian Koeberl, the director general of NHM. “There is no reason […] to cover the Venus of Willendorf and hide her nudity, neither in the museum nor on social media.”

While censoring Courbet's painting and the Venus of Willendorf, Facebook permits content from the lunatic fringe and as noted in an article by Carole Cadwallader "The UN found Facebook helped to facilitate a genocide in Myanmar We know that it helped foment an insurrection at the US Capitol. And its own research says it is harming teenagers. (A 2019 Facebook presentation slide, just revealed, said: “We make body-image issues worse for one in three teenage girls.”[/box]

Rank hypocrisy as well as the weird notion that human nudity is pornographic - even when it is stylised in an ancient artefact.

Sadly not surprising. Facebook and Twitter are selective on their enforcement of things. They sure can go in there and Crack down hard on anyone sharing something they consider "misinformation" on covid, but do next to nothing about the pedophiles and sharing of pedophilia materials on their platforms.

I fail to comprehend why a stylised ancient artefact is deemed pornographic. Seen "in the flesh" as it were, she is a remarkable and rather beautiful little figurine -she is small - and most likely a fertility figure in the same way as the Levantine high goddess dating from around 1250 BCE that was found at an excavation near Kibbutz Revadim. For some reason the link does not work but she is shown with long hair, a child at each breast, she is holding her labia open [a sign of fertility] and she has palm trees on her thighs

My brother and I are currently watching cheesy old sci-fi films from the 1950s and we happened upon "Attack of the 50-Foot Woman." The movie is just typical low-budget campiness, but the poster surprised me. One requires only a modest amount of imagination to find adult suggestion in the movie poster.

Then there's the old coppertone ad from the 1960s, which would really set the cat among the pigeons today.

Interesting as the reminiscences of past adverts might be, the underlying point of this thread is that an ancient figurine is not pornographic despite its stylised form that emphasises female genitalia, breasts and hips. This figurine is possibly a fertility figure.

It is evident [once again] that pornography, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.

The Venus of Willendorf? Seriously? That's a cultural icon. Are we back to censoring Michelangelo's "David" by adding a fig leaf?

As for the painting... Quite honestly it reminds me of something one found in Hustler magazine several decades back.

It's like how over at Netflix you have employees raising hell about and quitting over Dave Chappelle's comedy special but had circled the wagons around "Cuties," even calling it "art."

From time to time, I wonder if a warped enough mind could find something pornographic in a packet of rice.

If I remember rightly, some Roman saint or other actually gelded that.

ETA - I didn't remember rightly - I had remembered a hyperbolic comment about what da Vinci wanted to do.

From what I understand, Victoria would not have been the least in favour of having the fig leaf displayed in its intended location.

                              Or maybe not

When the Grand Duke of Tuscany gifted a cast of Michelangelo’s David to Queen Victoria in 1857, a large leaf was promptly sculpted to “spare the blushes of visiting female dignitaries,” according to the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).

Queen Victoria wasn't numbered among the visitors, and her personal concepts of "proper" were spectacularly out of step with the Zeitgeist.
