  • Sorry TDSers, Turns Out There Was No Rise In Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Last Year

Despite months of claims since the start of the Pandemic by TDSers that Trump calling covid the 'china virus' and pushing the (now widely accepted, but previously a 'conspiracy theory) Lab Leak theory was causing all sorts of attacks and violent hate crimes against Asians.... the hate crime rate and the simple assault rate against Asians appears to have likely FALLEN.

Some recent evidence has suggested that the national period of declining crime—which began in the mid-1990s, as rate of violence fell dramatically in the U.S.—may be over: The most recent Uniform Crime Report (UCR), an important though incomplete snapshot of homicides nationwide, found that homicide had increased by 30 percent from 2019 to 2020.

But just-released data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) paints a much less depressing picture. According to the 2020 NCVS report, the violent crime rate actually declined last year, if homicides are excluded. Moreover, the popular narrative that former President Donald Trump's anti-China rhetoric caused some spike in hate crimes against Asian-Americans appears to be wrong. For Asian-American victims, both the violent crime rate and simple assault rate declined from 2019 to 2020.

    Screen-Shot-2021-10-18-at-9.04.57-PM.png
It's important to interpret these findings cautiously. The NCVS does not count homicides; the data comes from telephone interviews with random Americans. It's thus a scientific survey, rather than a tally of actual crimes.

The UCR, on the other hand, consists of crimes reported to the FBI by law enforcement agencies. Police departments are not required to report any information at all, which means that the UCR is in some ways more accurate—these are verified reported crimes—but also more statistically unreliable. Year-to-year fluctuations in the data might represent different reporting procedures rather than any actual increase in crime; the overall number of crimes reported to the FBI is obviously just a small snapshot.

The public should take the findings from both reports with a grain of salt. It could be the case, obviously, that murders in cities increased while other categories of crime decreased elsewhere; it's also possible that certain minority communities suffered increased crime in a manner that isn't captured by the data. But with so much bad news about rising violence, the NCVS data suggests that things might not be as bad as we think.

"I opened the NCVS today fully expecting to see significant increases in violence and declines in reporting," wrote John Pfaff, a law professor at Fordham University. "I figured it was going to tell a worse story than the UCR. So I was quite surprised by what I saw. It did not at all confirm my priors."

You know we're in trouble when professors have to openly admit they were brainwashed by MSM and social media delusion.

The narrative that Trump supporters were even the ones involved in the widely reported incidents didn't stand up to even a cursory examination if anyone bothered to take 5 minutes to look.

A few months ago shuny posted some stuff about this, including an NBC story that found Anti-Asian hate crimes increased by nearly 150% in 2020, mostly in N.Y. and L.A., new report says. Of course the locations where this increase was said to be taking place and the significance of it failed to sink in.

Having bothered to at least skim through the evidence I posted the following:

Originally posted by rogue06 View Post
What's interesting is that when you read about an incident you find that in a large number of them where there is information concerning the alleged attacker, it turns out that they belong to various groups that did not support Trump. Like the Febreze spraying incident in the NY subway that was video taped. Not likely a Trump supporter.

Another story that received national attention was an attack on an 85 year old Thai man, Vicha Ratanapakdee, who died as a result of his head hitting the pavement during an attack in downtown San Francisco (a well-known hotbed of pro-Trump activity). CNN's coverage was typical in that they left out the detail that the killer was a black man who apparently ran across the street in order to attack him. Just that "a 19-year-old man was arrested." Likewise the New York Times, which quickly pivoted to linking it to Trump.

Another story that gained a lot of traction was that of Noriko Nasu, A Japanese woman who was attacked in downtown Seattle (another pro-Trump hot spot). Again coverage avoided describing the attacker. But when he was charged pictures of him again indicated he belonged to a group that didn't support Trump.

In fact, in an article from NBC's Today Show, the case of Nasu and two other Asians were discussed in detail, except for any description of the attacker.

Noel Quintana, a Filipino, who was viciously slashed across his face with a box cutter requiring a hundred stitches, was attacked by a Pashawn Boykins while riding a New York subway (like the Febreze sprayer, and again an area widely known for backing Trump). I cannot find any description but given the name the odds are extremely high he was, like Nasu and Ratanapakdee's attackers, is black.

The third, Denny Kim, was attacked in downtown Los Angeles (yet another bastion of Trump support) by gang members saying racial slurs. Last time I checked, there aren't a whole lot of white gang members in downtown Los Angeles.

The one thing that the MSM has been trying to obfuscate is the race of the attackers. From all reports, blacks constitute a very sizeable percentage of them. Even Al Sharpton has noticed and declared, "When Blacks attack Asians, Black leaders need to stand up."

Apparently, the view that it is largely blacks that have instigated the attacks led NBC to report on it but only to cite a study that found that "revealed more than three-quarters of offenders of anti-Asian hate crimes and incidents, from both before and during the pandemic, have been white, contrary to many of the images circulating online" and from the angle of expressing concern about "long-term consequences for racial solidarity."

The truth be damned, "racial solidarity" is at stake!

Of course whites constitute three-quarters of the population so that shouldn't be a surprise and there was suspicious silence about what percent that blacks commit given they represent 12.5% of the population.

Moreover, the last I checked, Biden got 43% of the white vote, so not every white person is a Trump supporter -- especially in urban areas where it seems that the majority of these incidents take place (that MAGA hat wearing white men would be hanging around downtown Chicago late at night was one of the first red flags that made police suspicious of the Jussie Smollett hoax).

I'm always still in trouble again

"You're by far the worst poster on TWeb" and "TWeb's biggest liar" --starlight (the guy who says Stalin was a right-winger)
"Overall I would rate the withdrawal from Afghanistan as by far the best thing Biden's done" --Starlight

Not only that but the issue of how the data is gathered. There was a lot of noise about a sharp increase in hate crimes directed toward Muslims after 9/11 and I would be surprised if it didn't happen. But how the data was gathered makes it difficult if not impossible to determine what the actual numbers are.

First, the government relied heavily on CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) for reports on hate crime. Just one of the problems in relying on a group with a vested interest in their being an increase is the fact that CAIR included numerous proven hoaxes even long after they were exposed to dishonestly pad the numbers.

For instance, there was a famous case up in New York of a young Muslim woman being accosted while waiting for a subway. It got a lot of news coverage. But what got much less coverage is that it was quickly exposed as a hoax thanks to numerous closed circuit cameras monitoring the area. The woman later admitted she went out partying with friends and stayed out way past the curfew her parents had established and was scared of how they would react so she concocted a lie.

That incident, like many similar fraudulent cases, was still included among the hate crimes that CAIR reported.

The second mistake was relying on SPLC (Southern Poverty Law Center). Decades ago they were a fairly reliable source but they turned into a nuthouse that declares anything and everything that they disagree with as "hate speech." On the flip side, if they agree with you politically, then they bend over backwards defending you and refuse to consider any activity no matter how violent or what the perpetrator explicitly admitted, as a hate crime. This has led to the FBI and military cutting ties with them and tossing out the material they got from them.

With this sort of history, I approach claims of sharp incidents in hate crimes with a jaundiced eye. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but I get like the fella from Missouri when it comes to these claims. IOW, show me. Let me see the actual data and how it was acquired.

Moreover, as I found when I initially looked into it, nearly without exception, where I could look into a hate crime directed against Asians, the perpetrators belonged to a group that are part of the core constituency of the Democrats with nearly 90% voting for them in every election. IOW, not your typical Trump supporters or even traditional conservatives. Further, even as the article that shuny cited notes, the areas where such incidents took place are liberal bastions, solidly in control of the Democrats for generations. Areas that are overwhelmingly "red."

To cut to the chase... those identified as attacking Asians would have voted for Biden or maybe Bernie (if they voted) and not Trump. So it is hard to comprehend how Trump is supposed to be their Pied Piper leading them to commit hate crimes against Asians when these are the sort of folks who would either adamantly ignore Trump or make a point of doing the exact opposite.

I'm always still in trouble again
