  • British MP stabbed to death while meeting voters

    Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-58929453

Conservative MP Sir David Amess has been stabbed as he met constituents at a regular surgery.

Essex Police said they were called to reports of a stabbing in Leigh-on-Sea at 12:05 BST and arrested a man.

Police recovered a knife and said they were not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.

Former party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith said he was "praying for a full recovery".

He said on Twitter: "My thoughts are with David Amess MP and his family at this awful time.

"Praying for a full recovery following this appalling, shocking news. This angry, violent behaviour cannot be tolerated in politics or any other walk of life."

The 69-year-old, who is MP for Southend West, was stabbed as he met constituents at Belfairs Methodist Church.

An air ambulance was sent to the scene.

Southend councillor John Lamb, who was at the scene after the stabbing, said Sir David was a family man, with four daughters and a son.

"He's always trying to help people, and especially refugees he's tried to help. He's a very amicable person and he does stick by his guns, he says what he believes and he sticks by it," Mr Lamb said.

He told the BBC the MP had not been taken to hospital but was operated on by medics at the scene.

Mr Lamb said he was still waiting to hear the extent of Sir David's injuries, but understood the MP was in a "very serious" condition.

The Jo Cox Foundation, the charity set up in memory of the MP who was murdered in 2016, said it was "horrified" by the stabbing.

"We are thinking of him, his family and loved ones at this distressing time," the foundation said.

Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer said he was thinking of Sir David, his family and his staff after the "horrific and deeply shocking news".

Reports are currently saying that "a man" has been arrested. The lack of further details about the suspect's identity suggests that he is probably not a white conservative.

Yep way too early to tell. If we were a few days into this I'd lean towars silence on it being more indicative but not this soon.

However, The Independent understands that the suspect is of Somali origin, and the murder is being treated at this point as a probable Islamist terror attack.

Eh, past precedent is that if a suspect is white, male, and conservative, then the media reports those details immediately along with a name and often even a photo. But anybody else and they are a lot more circumspect about what details get reported. Granted, I could easily be wrong, but there is a pattern with these things.

It's more of a pattern with US news organizations. This being the UK, their practices might be a bit different.

Well knifing people in a political context seems to be a Jihadist thing of late in the UK. And I did use a question mark...

The Daily Telegraph reported that the arrested man was believed to be a Somalian national

Based on reporting patterns, a white supremacist would have been identified as such without hesitation - even if it was no more that a suspicion there comment to that effect would be expected.

                      However
Sky News understands the individual who has been arrested is a British citizen with Somali heritage.

At least in the American media it is pretty much a given that when they don't release any details about the suspect that person is not a white Christian conservative. Otherwise that would be repeatedly emphasized.

Similarly when a politician gets in trouble and there is no mention of party affiliation in the first couple paragraphs, the smart money is on that the person is a Democrat.

Assuming that his religious beliefs played a part in the attack. It coulda been politics or even something personal.

The killing of Conservative MP Sir David Amess is being treated as a terrorist incident by police.

Sir David was stabbed multiple times at his constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex on Friday.

The Metropolitan Police said there was a potential link to Islamist extremism. A 25-year-old British man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

Home Secretary Priti Patel paid tribute to Sir David as a "man of the people" who was "killed doing a job he loved".

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer laid flowers at the scene together on Saturday morning.

Ms Patel and Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle also paid their respects outside Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.

Speaking a short time later, Ms Patel said: "We are all struggling to come to terms with the fact that David Amess has been so cruelly taken away from all of us."

She said the Southend West MP "was absolutely there for everyone, he was a much loved parliamentarian, to me he was a dear and loyal friend, but also he was a devoted husband and father".

Ms Patel, who has asked police forces to immediately review security arrangements for MPs, maintained a balance could be found to allow face-to-face meetings with constituents to continue.

"We will carry on, we live in an open society, a democracy," she said. "We cannot be cowed by any individual or any motivation... to stop us from functioning".

Sir David, 69, had been an MP since 1983 and was married with four daughters and a son. He is the second serving MP to be killed in recent years, following the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in July 2016.

Scotland Yard's decision that the killing of Sir David Amess was an act of terrorism confirms that, on the basis of what they know so far, the killer was motivated to use violence to further their cause.

There's no public suggestion from investigations at the moment that there is a specific additional threat to MPs - but detectives and colleagues in MI5 will be delving deeply into the life of the suspect to understand how he reached this mindset and whether this was an attack by a "lone actor" or someone who is part of a network.

Secondly, it confirms the initial conclusion that there would need to be more resources thrown at the investigation.

Behind the scenes a wider range of detectives and support staff will now have been brought into action. If officers have recovered the suspect's mobile phone, they will now be forensically examining its contents to uncover potential evidence of mindset and planning.

A phone - and any bank cards - will also help detectives track the suspect's movements in the days and weeks before the incident. That in turn leads them to CCTV so they can build a three-dimensional view of his life.
