  • AOC's "Tax The Rich" Dress Designer Has Tax Warrants In Multiple States

You literally could not write this if you tried!

AOC wore her 'Tax The Rich' dress to a gala that charges 35,000 per seat, and it turns out her dress designer owes taxes in multiple states and has multiple warrants in NY. And apparently runs their business like a sweat shop.

AOC's 'Tax the rich' dress designer owes tax debt in multiple states

The designer's company racked up three open tax warrants in New York state and got into even deeper trouble with the Feds

Designer Aurora James called her "Tax the Rich" dress for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a "powerful message" — but it’s not one she has taken to heart.

The 37-year-old fashionista who made waves at the Met Gala with Democratic-Socialist AOC last week is a notorious tax deadbeat with unpaid debts dogging her in multiple states, records show.

Most of luxe-living James’ arrears center on Cultural Brokerage Agency, an LLC she formed in 2011 to serve as the parent company of her fashion brand, which today is known as Brother Vellies. It’s a favorite of people like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Meghan Markle.

The company racked up three open tax warrants in New York state for failing to withhold income taxes from employees’ paychecks totaling $14,798, the state Department of Taxation and Finance told The Post. The debts — which were incurred before the pandemic — stem from 2018 and 2019. The company has been hit with 15 warrants in total since 2015.

The company got into a deeper hole with the feds. Between April 2018 and April 2019, the Internal Revenue Service placed six federal liens on Cultural Brokerage Agency totaling $103,220. The liens specifically cite the company’s failure to remit employee payroll taxes.

The IRS declined to comment on their current status.

"Just because they take it out of your paycheck doesn’t mean they’re sending it to the government," David Cenedella, a Baruch College taxation lecturer explained after reviewing the liens. "It’s certainly not something you want. I would not say your average business out there has this. Something went wrong."

While James apparently has no problem stiffing the Taxman, she isn’t shy about taking money from taxpayers — her company received in $41,666 in pandemic relief aid.

Over the years Cultural Brokerage Agency has also faced multiple legal challenges as a result of habitual nonpayment of worker benefits.

In October 2019 the state Worker’s Compensation Board slapped the company with a $17,000 fine for not carrying worker’s-comp insurance between March 2017 and February 2018. The company currently owes $62,722 and no payments have been received to date, a rep for the board told The Post. Workers’ comp is paid out when an employee is hurt at work and misses time.

Ex-staffers blasted the operation as a sweatshop that relied on legions of unpaid interns working full-time jobs.

"I experienced a lot of harassment when I worked for her," one former contract employee told The Post. "Aurora would ask me to do things that were not in anyone’s job description, like scheduling her gynecological appointments. The work environment was so hostile that I was afraid to ask for my check." The employee was ultimately terminated.

An ex-intern called James "quite cold," adding that "she never gives recognition or acknowledgement to her team."

James is also an alleged rent deadbeat, records show.

In August 2020, James’ landlord filed papers to evict Brother Vellies from their location at 71 Franklin St. in Brooklyn, as well as demanding more than $25,000 plus interest for staying beyond the end of her lease. The case was settled.

She was sued by a previous landlord in February 2018 for more than $5,000 in unpaid rent at her shop’s old address at 209 West 38th Street in Manhattan.

"Aurora, obviously we did not want it to come to this, but you never have paid your rent in a timely manner," wrote Matthew Mandell, a rep for her Manhattan landlord in a frustrated March 2018 email. "We have been more than patient."

Though AOC proudly labeled James a "working class" designer as they waltzed down the Met Gala red carpet, her lifestyle has been anything but. As the pandemic raged across America, igniting a deep recession, James scooped up a $1.6 million residence in Los Angeles in September 2020.

The Tudor-style home with cathedral ceilings, a master-bedroom fireplace and backyard hot tub sits on 7,095 square feet in the posh Hollywood Hills, according to RedFin.

True to form, the property is already listed as "delinquent" by the Los Angeles County assessor’s office, which told The Post James owed $2,504 in property taxes.

Though AOC was comped tickets to the annual ball for boldfacers, entry to the famously exclusive Met Gala runs $35,000 a head. James attended the bash with Benjamin Bronfman, a rumored boyfriend she’s frequently spotted with. Bronfman, 39, is a scion of the powerful Bronfman family and its distilling empire. He is worth an estimated $100 million.

Photos from the event shows the pair smiling broadly with Ocasio-Cortez and her boyfriend Riley Roberts.

James’ unpaid bills belie her champagne tastes. She frequently jets off to exclusive locations, her Instagram richly decorated with photos from Jamaica, Morocco, France, Indonesia, Mexico, Italy, the United Kingdom and The Hamptons.

She also found money to make a $2,700 donation to Hillary Clinton in 2016.

"It’s the height of hypocrisy when socialists attend a $30,000 per ticket gala with a message of ‘tax the rich’ while wearing an overpriced dress by a luxury designer who doesn’t pay taxes," Republican Staten Island Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis told The Post. "What happened to everyone paying their fair share?"

Both James and her reps did not respond to multiple requests for comment from The Post.

James pushed progressive causes long before making headlines for dressing America’s most famous socialist. After the death of George Floyd in May 2020, she created the 15 percent pledge, demanding that major companies commit to buying 15% of their products from black-owned businesses. The idea took off with major companies like Bloomingdale’s, Vogue, Sephora, and Crate & Barrel, according to a 15 percent pledge website.

"This is the least you can do for us. We represent 15% of the population and we need to represent 15% of your shelf space," James said in an Instagram post announcing the idea.

Ocasio-Cortez, who has made a career out of demanding better worker wages and benefits, and taxing the rich to pay for her budget-busting federal programs, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Although I'm still interested in whether or not AOC pays the taxes on the gown as well as the ticket for the gala.

Those were mighty pricey gifts $$$

I'm always still in trouble again

All of this feeds into the sense that many on the left love to raise taxes but have no intention on paying them. That's for the unwashed masses and conservatives.

Timothy Geithner is probably the example who will be most likely to come to mind. He was cheating on his taxes for years and then appointed the Secretary of the Treasury (which oversees the IRS) under Obama and who merely had to pay his back taxes without the massive fines, penalties and interest that the IRS typically tacks on to Americans who aren't prominent Democrat politicians.

Then there was Tom Daschle who was U.S. Senate Majority Leader (and had sanctimoniously lectured "Make no mistake, tax cheaters cheat us all, and the IRS should enforce our laws to the letter") and was Obama's pick for Health and Human Services Secretary. After his tax cheating ways came to light he, unlike Geithner, withdrew his name from consideration. But like Geithner, I believe that he as well merely had to pay what he originally owed, sans fees and penalties.

The same thing with Rep. Hilda Solis (Labor) and Nancy Killefer (Budget and Spending reform), who also withdrew their nominations by Obama because of tax problems[1].

It is effectively an interest free loan that they only have to pay back if they get caught.

And it wasn't just those at the top. It was relatively rife throughout his entire Administration

Source: 36 Obama aides owe $833,000 in back taxes

How embarrassing this must be for President Obama, whose major speech theme so far this campaign season has been that every single American, no matter how rich, should pay their "fair share" of taxes.

Because how unfair -- indeed, un-American -- it is for an office worker like, say, Warren Buffet's secretary to dutifully pay her taxes, while some well-to-do people with better educations and higher incomes end up paying a much smaller tax rate.

Or, worse, skipping their taxes altogether.

A new report just out from the Internal Revenue Service reveals that 36 of President Obama's executive office staff owe the country $833,970 in back taxes. These people working for Mr. Fair Share apparently haven't paid any share, let alone their fair share.

Previous reports have shown how well-paid Obama's White House staff is, with 457 aides pulling down more than $37 million last year. That's up seven workers and nearly $4 million from the Bush administration's last year.

Nearly one-third of Obama's aides make more than $100,000 with 21 being paid the top White House salary of $172,200, each.

The IRS' 2010 delinquent tax revelations come as part of a required annual agency report on federal employees' tax compliance. Turns out, an awful lot of folks being paid by taxpayers are not paying their own income taxes.

The report finds that thousands of federal employees owe the country more than $3.4 billion in back taxes. That's up 3% in the past year.

That scale of delinquency could annoy voters, hard-pressed by their own costs, fears and stubbornly high unemployment despite Joe Biden's many promises.

The tax offenders include employees of the U.S. Senate who help write the laws imposed on everyone else. They owe $2.1 million. Workers in the House of Representatives owe $8.5 million, Department of Education employees owe $4.3 million and over at Homeland Security, 4,697 workers owe about $37 million. Active duty military members owe more than $100 million.

The Treasury Department, where Obama nominee Tim Geithner had to pay up $42,000 in his own back taxes before being confirmed as secretary, has 1,181 other employees with delinquent taxes totaling $9.3 million.

Does anyone else remember how old Joe while still VP once proclaimed that paying higher taxes was the "patriotic" thing to do? Seems like there was a severe dearth of patriotism in the Obama-Biden Administration smiley snicker.gif

        Not to mention his own

I've repeatedly said that any conservative who preaches family values and even runs on it and is revealed to have anything but they deserve to take a harder hit than someone who never took those positions. It is sort of like when a police officer who gets caught breaking the law. They are usually treated harsher because they were entrusted with enforcing the law not breaking it.

Conversely, liberals who preach that everyone needs to pay their share and keep raising taxes ought to take a harder hit when they're exposed as being a tax cheat. But for some reason that is not what happens. In fact, as the above demonstrates, the opposite often happens.

IOW, not only do liberal Democrats not suffer a bigger hit when they get caught in acts of blatant hypocrisy, they almost always get off lighter than what an average citizen does who commits similar acts.

And that attitude extends into the press.

This graphic is a couple years old and the situations may have changed -- either for the better or worse -- about how some of those on at MSNBC and who keep calling on others to "Pay their fair share" but won't do so themselves:
There was another graphic of MSNBC personalities who owed back taxes and IIRC the only one that ever paid up was former Hardball host Chris "tingle-up-my-leg" Matthews.

And as that graphic illustrates some of the big bag men for the left, like Soros and even and perhaps especially Warren Buffett, have issues with paying back taxes that total into the billions.

        1. The same thing happened to Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) then the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee (the chief tax-writing committee). The latter was such a flagrant violator with so many different offenses that he was formerly censured by Congress and took a leave of absence as chair (a position he lost when Republican won control of the House later that year), but also merely had to pay his back taxes. He actually had the audacity to declare that he didn't pay taxes on some property because he was confused by the law that he helped draft and pass and expected others to follow "confused" or not.

Likewise with then Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) one of the richest members of Congress) who charged the taxpayers for use of a private airplane she owned and didn't pay property taxes on for years and who merely had to pay the $287,273 in four years of back taxes that she tried to steal, no interest, penalties or any of the things an average citizen would be faced with in such circumstances) and continued on her merry way.

Democrats notoriously exemplify everything they preach against. Taxes, racism and climate change are three biggest issues they're the most phony about.

And the vaccine mandate to that - if they were really serious about solving a problem, they'd be on the border demanding every illegal alien [undocumented person] get the vaccine or NO ENTRY.

True, but I can't see that as being unintentional. I just can't.

I'm really wrestling with that.... I think I've come to the conclusion (so far) that they really don't care about the optics.
Where there are conflicting narratives (everybody needs to be vaccinated - the border needs to stay wide open, who cares about vaccinations) they really don't care as long as their agenda is being advanced.

Yep. The mayor of San Fransisco got caught a couple days ago at a crowded night club where she and everyone else were unmasked, dancing and signing, in violation of her own city's mask mandate ordinances. It's all the same with these folks. "rules for thee but not for me"
