Ohio mayor warns school board during meeting: Resign or face charges for 'child pornography'

A mayor in Ohio told all five local school board members to resign during a board meeting or face charges over class material for high schoolers he deemed "child pornography."

"It has come to my attention that your educators are distributing essentially what is child pornography in the classroom," Hudson Mayor Craig Shubert told the Hudson Board of Education during a meeting on Monday.

"I've spoken to a judge this evening. She's already confirmed that. So I'm going to give you a simple choice: You either choose to resign from this board of education or you will be charged," Shubert added, which was met with cheers from the audience.

Shubert’s comments came in response to writing prompts found in a book called "642 Things to Write About," which had been distributed to some high school students who were taking a college credit course.

The material included asking students to "write a sex scene you wouldn't show your mom," "rewrite the sex scene from above into one that you'd let your mom read," and another prompt asking students to drink a beer and describe how it tastes, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

The material set off a firestorm from parents, including speakers who also attended the board meeting and called the prompts, "disgusting" and a form of "grooming."

Hudson City Schools Superintendent Phil Herman called the material "inappropriate and offensive writing prompts" in a prepared statement and said the books were pulled from schools on Monday.

"The district immediately determined this writing resource should not be in the hands of our students, and on Monday, collected the books from the students enrolled in the course," Herman said. "It is important to note that at no time were any of these inappropriate writing prompts assigned as part of the class."

Hudson High School principal Brian Wilch also said Monday that he and his administrative team apologized to parents, and explained that the course was offered in association with Hiram College and the "642 Things" book had previously been used.

"We did not exercise due diligence when we reviewed this resource and as a result, we overlooked several writing prompts among the 642 that are not appropriate for our high school audience," Wilch said. "…We feel terrible. At no time were any of these inappropriate prompts selected or discussed, but still they were there and they were viewable, and you can't unsee them."

    You beat me to it.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

The School Board is refusing to resign.

The leader of the Hudson school board said he and his four colleagues don't intend to resign after the mayor called on them to step down or potentially face criminal charges over material in a high school writing course.

in a prepared statement Wednesday, Board of Education President David Zuro said: "At this time, no Board of Education member has indicated any intention to resign."

"While we respect the mayor’s position within the city of Hudson, in accordance with the state laws of Ohio, the supervision of the public schools of this district is the responsibility of the Board of Education," Zuro said.

It's not clear whether the board can be held criminally liable for material that was being used in a class, according to the Ohio School Boards Association.

I hope they do bring charges against them.

I'm not so sure; it would be easy to slip something like that past a person who wasn't suspicious - and if the previous edition had not included offensive material, there probably would have been nothing to arouse suspicion. The people in the firing line aren't the source of the problem, at most they are mid-range.

He is the owner of the 'company culture' - he sets the tone. If he doesn't deserve to be fired, he SURE needs to get a better grip on his sphere of influence.

gives a bit of background. Teachers have been aware of the content since at least last year. So - did they report the problem without any action being taken, or did they just sit on it?

And THAT would be the purview of the Superintendent of Schools who sets the tone.

I'll put it as an analogy - though I know that it has actually happened.

A driver for public transport (government department) notes a risk, and writes a report. Somewhere in the seven or eight link chain between the driver and the Transport Minister, that report gets filed in the "do not disturb" cabinet. Then the inevitable accident happens. Should the Minister be called to account? Who should be in the firing line? Neither the Minister nor the driver knows that the report has been buried. The Minister doesn't even know of its existence. If the driver had not filed the report or knew that it had been buried, the driver would be partially responsible. Blame belongs to the person who buried the report.

Same goes here. Who failed to report the problem or failed to act appropriately on that report? Or should it be required of the board members that they personally vet every page of every book before it is approved for use?

I think you might me missing the point, friend --- the guy at the top "sets the culture". If there's a company culture of overlooking sexual misconduct, that's because the guy at the top hasn't made it crystal clear that sexual misconduct is not kosher. If the guy at the top allows racist remarks, same thing. If the guy at the top is aware that schools are under a microscope because our nation is in an uproar about CRT and marxist teachings, and other crap in our schools, you'd think he'd take the time to set the tone --- we focus on MATH, ENGLISH, HISTORY....

See, what's been going on here is that the TEACHER UNIONS run our public schools. And WAY too few School Superintendents stand up to the crap they (unions) push in our schools.

                      Some more background....

Because of COVID, and students doing "distance learning", there are a WHOLE LOT of parents who have been shocked at what is being taught in our schools. There are battles in school board meetings all over our country.

In THIS environment, a superintendent of schools has a responsibility to take ownership for what's going on in his/her district. They need to have their head on a swivel, or it will be on a chopping block.

So - assuming that the superintendent isn't the cause of the problem, the real problem won't get dealt with. It will be left to continue undisturbed until the next time.

Almost enough to bury H_A's nonsense is my guess. Which brings up another scenario - what happens if your superintendent is very much into doing things properly, but he has a couple of unsuspected H_As a link or two down the chain.

Then there's a showdown. As happened in our town. Our school district fired our previous superintendent because he was allowing the union to run things.
When the next superintendent came on board, he fired a half-dozen instigators who were doing the union's bidding.

The Union -- The National Education Agency -- is evil, with a Marxist agenda and only cares about the dues of the union members (the teachers, cafeteria workers, custodians, bus drivers, etc).
The NEA is not about Education - it's about collecting money and buying politicians, and keeping their own butts in power.
