Minneapolis City Council Committee OK’s Measure To Put Replacing MPD On November Ballot

This could prove to be very interesting.

Backing away from "defunding the police" and going with "replacing the police".

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Minneapolis City Council is one step closer to getting a measure on the November ballot that would do away with the Minneapolis Police Department. The ballot measure would replace police with a Public Safety Department.

The measure is so complex and so much is at stake that, for the first time, the council committee also approved a lengthy explanatory note that will also be on the ballot.

The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

It will be interesting to see if this passes - I suspect it won't.

That has been the City Council's stated goal all along. Replacing the police with social workers, mental heath officials and the like.

I'm sure they'll be useful in curbing Minneapolis' burgeoning violent crime epidemic. Homicide is on track this year to be up 89%. Likewise, robberies are up 32% and violent crime in general is up 14%. And with an overall crime rate of 57 per one thousand residents, the city is subject to one of the highest crime rates in America when compared to all communities of all sizes.

I'm always still in trouble again

It is interesting to see that in spite of the reduction in the force (largely due to officers simply quitting and retiring) resulting in a sharp increase in crime across the board (see post above) that the city council is still trying to do it.

Something occurred to me recently: this "defund/replace the police" movement is only being enacted on local and state levels. As far as I know, there have been no calls for disbanding federal law enforcement like the secret service and FBI. Is that who liberals are planning to put in place of local departments? Is all of this "defund the police" nonsense really just a scheme to usher in direct federal control of the local populations?

Well, we've had even some of our own posters here criticize the federal officers as thugs - when they were responding to riots and the burning of federal buildings.

This is an area where the answer isn't one way or another way. Yes, some crime is committed by the mentally ill. However, there is also crime committed by people who have chosen to make crime their profession. I would agree that our current system doesn't do a good job of differentiating between the two. We also haven't done a great job of rehabilitation. So I feel taking a look at all this is a worthwhile effort.

However, swinging the pendulum from the one extreme of everybody goes to jail to the other extreme of all crime is committed by people with mental health issues will not solve the crime issue. And I agree the early indications are it makes the situation worse.

The problem often is that when the police get there it is hardly the time or place to attempt a diagnoses for why that armed assailant is behaving in that manner.

I have a feeling that if any community successfully replace police officers with social workers that the result will be a lot of dead social workers.

They have NO concept of the danger of an officer approaching a "domestic dispute" -- in most jurisdictions, officers are not allowed to go in alone because of the inherent danger of one or both of the parties turning against the officer.

And when they see the LA shoplifting videos that have recently gone viral, the copycats will cause that number to increase.

Oh, yeah, they don't even try to hide the fact that they're walking out of a store with hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise.

It's with an attitude of you better not say a word if you know what's good for you.

And I'm sure there are many on the left with the attitude of that's what insurance is for.

Do they have the same laws as San Francisco where's it's basically legal to steal whatever you want as long it's less than $1000?
