There is no doubt about it.

As the Economist points out, the anti-vax movement in America today is unprecedented. There have always been people who objected to vaccinations, but they were on the fringe, a smattering of naysayers. The price of these rejectionists was usually small — a few outbreaks of measles every now and then. This time, it’s different. In the midst of a raging pandemic that has killed more than 600,000 Americans, we’ve seen the rise of a vast right-wing conspiracy theory about the vaccines. It has been stoked by influential figures in the conservative media and tolerated, even encouraged, by powerful Republican politicians.

The results are damning. As of June, 86 percent of Democrats had received at least one dose, compared with 52 percent of Republicans. All the states with the lowest levels of vaccination — Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Wyoming and Louisiana — voted heavily for Donald Trump. Barely half of Republican House members report being vaccinated.
    Repubs are completely bonkers.

It is hard to avoid the conclusion that we have collectively earned it all, having strayed from a righteous path and turned our backs on truth and wisdom.

In which states do we have the highest fatalities? The top four are in bright blue states. Massachusetts, which is #3 for fatalities per 100,000 people is also ranked #2 for percentage of those fully vaccinated. Rhode Island, with the fourth highest mortality rate ranks #5 in fully vaccinated. And New Jersey, which has the nation's highest mortality rate from the Chicom coronavirus is #8 for having the most folks fully vaccinated.

I wish this straw man would die in a fire. Having reasonable concerns about a specific experimental vaccine which has a disproportionally high rate of reported negative outcomes does not make one an "anti-vaxxer" any more than having reasonable concerns about a dangerous design flaw in a specific automobile makes one "anti-motor vehicle".

The entire "unprecedented" claim is hogwash. Resistance was far higher during the 19th cent. The Leicester Demonstration March of 1885 was one of the most notorious anti-vaccination demonstrations with 100,000 participants. Reviews of records of newborns in the region found that in 1883 of of 2281 births only 707 babies were vaccinated as required by law. That's an awful high level of opposition. Much higher than anything we see today.

Isn't that what straw man arguments are for?

                Except you don't have:
                1. Reasonable concerns
                2. About a specific vaccine (i.e. the Pfizer one, or the Moderna one, or the J&J one, or the AstraZeneca one)

Your concerns are unreasonable and you seem to treat all the different covid vaccines as a single one.

                  What a stupid statement.

I can think for myself as much, if not far more, than the next person. But I don't have infinite memory to remember everything in my life so I extensively use a calendar diary to organize future events, and despite my best efforts there are still things that do slip through the cracks and get forgotten. Getting the occasional reminder is a good thing.

Wow. Talk about a stupid statement.

So unless the government reminds you to get vaccinated, you might forget? No, I don't believe you can think "far more" than the next person. You're either memory impaired or an imbecile.

And old Joe would likely add that it is primarily blacks who would forget since they can't be trusted to get anything done right without the guiding hand of benevolent white liberals such as himself.

I don't think it makes much sense to compare total fatalities, most of which occurred before the vaccines were approved, and before doctors figured out the best ways to keep covid-19 patients alive, with current vaccination rates.

If you rank states by current average daily deaths per 100,000, those four states are ranked

                          28 - New Jersey
                          33 - Massachusetts

And you think taking a snapshot of one particular day or week is a more accurate? If next month any of them are hot spots will you be arguing that we need to look at it as a whole rather than looking at one particular moment?

It's certainly more accurate than including deaths that happened before the vaccines were approved.

I'm not pretending to do a study on the effectiveness of the vaccines. If you want to compare the states, you should also take into account other factors like population density, weather, what variants are predominant, and the behavior of the population with regard to wearing masks and social distancing.

But the snapshot is suggestive, with a real divide between red states and blue states, and I think it explains why GOP leaders are becoming a lot more vocal about recommending that people get vaccinated.
