  • Tennessee GOP goes anti-vax

After intense pressure from GOP lawmakers, the Tennessee Department of Health has now said it will:
    - Hold no vaccination events of any kind in schools.
    - Send no reminders about, or material on, vaccines to teenagers.

This does not simply include Covid vaccines (Covid is currently surging in Tennessee), but includes flu, measles, meningitis, polio etc. It also includes sending no follow-up reminders about the second covid vaccine for anyone who has already had their first shot.

GOP lawmakers floated the idea of abolishing the whole Tennessee Department of Health if it didn't stop encouraging teenagers to get vaccinated. The head of the department's vaccination programs was subsequently fired.

This has been labelled the GOP's 'make polio great again' initiative, or 'killing the kids to own the libs'.

I'm a skeptic of the covid vaxes in particular, and I think in general there's a tendency to overstate the benefit/risk ratio of vaxes, but even I think the TN GOP went over the top, assuming the OP is correct. The linked article is ad-walled, so I can't read it.

In a population that is only partially vaccinated, the virus has the opportunity to mutate and a vaccine resistant variant will eventually emerge. Vaccination has to be very widespread before herd immunity is reached. Therefore anti-vacation pressures are exceedingly unwise.

Good for them. Nobody should be coerced into getting a risky experimental medication that is still considered suitable only for emergency use. Perhaps we can revisit this topic again in a few years after testing is completed for the China flu vaccines.

As for other vaccines, that's between you and your doctor, and the government should keeps its nose out of our personal affairs.

This applies to all vaccines, not just covid.

Though at this point, given a quarter of the world's population have taken covid vaccines, they are surely among some of the most tested vaccines in history.

The government is not holding people down and vaccinating them, it's sending them reminders that they might want to consult their doctor about getting a vaccine.

No. I was pointing out that the GOP's restrictions in Tennessee apply to all vaccines, not just covid.

So if you're going to pretend you're really concerned that the covid vaccine has been authorized under the FDA's emergency use protocol, and that you therefore claim to support the GOP's actions with regard to the covid vaccine... that still wouldn't justify their same actions with regard to all other vaccines. You would need to come up with some other anti-vax argument.

I...... don't see the issue here. Good for them, that's their right as a state. I don't see why the government should be involved at all in the first place, so....

It's not your personal affair because it affects others.

If, through your negligence in willfully not getting vaccinated, you get the virus and transfer it to someone and they die from it, that is morally equivalent to manslaughter / negligent homicide on your part.

Just as the government has every right and duty to intervene if you cause the death of someone else, the same applies with vaccines.

Just as the government has an interest in requiring that your car be sufficiently safe to drive on the road so you don't kill others through mechanical failure, so they have an interest in requiring your body be sufficiently safe to be around others so you don't kill others through the spread of preventable disease.

This is another one of those statements that causes me to wonder what personal freedoms the government couldn't deny based on similar logic.

Even more troubling is how easily statements like this roll off the tongues of liberals.
