Police: 2 women, child shot in New York City's Times Square

NEW YORK (AP) — Three innocent bystanders including a 4-year-old girl who was toy shopping were shot in New York City's busy Times Square on Saturday afternoon when someone opened fire during a dispute between several men, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said. All the victims were expected to recover.

I don't think you can conclude much from a single, non-lethal, incident.

Crime in NYC, like in the US generally and all Western nations, has massively dropped across the last few decades. In NYC specifically, the murder rate is 80% lower than it was 30 years ago, and other kinds of crime are also down 80% compared to 30 years ago.

We would need to look at more recent stats, not long-term trends.

NYPD Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for March 2021

      April 6, 2021

For the month of March 2021, New York City saw increases in index crimes, with the exception of robbery and burglary. Overall index crime rose 2.4% compared with March 2020, driven by a 36% increase in murder (34 v. 25) and a 35.1% increase in grand larceny auto (666 v. 493). There was a 11.8% decrease in robbery (842 v. 955) in March 2021, and a 8.5% reduction in burglary (919 v. 1004) compared to the previous year. Felonious assault saw a 0.9% increase compared to March 2020 (1643 v. 1629), and shooting incidents increased to 99 v. 56 in March 2020 (+76.8%).

Combating gun violence in New York City remains a central focus for the NYPD. For the month of March 2021, there were 492 gun arrests citywide. This is an increase of 66.8% compared to March 2020, or +197 arrests. Patrol Borough Bronx and Patrol Borough Brooklyn North are leading the way with 162 and 113 arrests, respectively. As always, the NYPD continually deploys personnel to areas experiencing an uptick in violence. Additionally, precision policing allows investigators to build strong cases against those very few criminals who are the persistent drivers of violence.

“Our hardworking police officers and investigators are relentless in the pursuit of public safety for all New Yorkers,” said Police Commissioner Dermot Shea. “Their work to prevent and investigate crime – as well as to build relationships with those they serve –continues, every day, in every borough and neighborhood of the city.”

Murder is up 36%, Rape up 30%, shooting incidents up 67%, and 35% increase in grand theft auto over same period last year.

I did wonder if there was the danger of someone falling for a 2020 comparison when I pulled up the same site prior to writing my post above.

For some reason, that I can't quite put my finger on, 2020 wasn't a normal year.

You're thinking that 2020 was an especially low year, so any comparison the following year would look artificially high?

So, take a look at the TWO YEAR change.
The numbers for Murder are up 32%
          Burglary is up 12.6%
And the topic at hand - shootings -- up nearly double over the past 2 years.
Grand Theft Auto also nearly double.

And during the same period that homicides were plummeting we were also experiencing a skyrocket increase in the number of firearms in private hands.

Cops have been leaving in droves and those that remain are afraid to do their jobs. Of course crime is up.

Not if you look at the long term trend, but this would be the "hockey stick" affect.

Had been trending down for a long time, now heading back up, and sharply.

So, considering that chart, when you look at "past 28 days" compared to same period last year, or "same week" as compared to last year --- those crimes are WAY UP!!!!
Shooting incidents are 160 and 200%!!!

My apologies for not including the links -- I thought I had...

City Wide Crime Statistics Weekly (PDF)
City Wide Crime Statistics Weekly (Excel)

So the most current weekly report is pretty sobering... The increase in "same week' (most current) is even higher than the % for "past 28 days" compared to prior year.
Things are most certainly going in the wrong direction, pretty quickly.
