So you realize you've lost the argument and are now just hoping if you make up random accusations they'll distract from that outcome?

I am in mandatory isolation until Monday at 0700 when I go to the hospital for a surgery, as long as my Covid test (collected yesterday by a courier) comes back negative by today at noon.
We still don't go inside restaurants or pubs, etc etc......

It's not progressive, it's what we all tend to support, and our CONSERVATIVE government which took us through the highs and lows of this pandemic has just been given a very strong show of support with our council elections and the Halifax Parliamentary seat win which labour has previously held for decades. Not progressive...... just trusting in our system, I guess.

Yes, I know you lost the argument with that appeal to outrage. This confession by projection is a nice touch, but unnecessary. We knew that you had nothing the instant you made that fallacious appeal.

Haven't tried to use the influenza numbers because reality doesn't fit your narrative, huh?

In my country, which rigorously tracks every covid case, we saw that schools can serve as a transmission vector for covid and be a source of outbreaks among students.

My country eliminated covid and spent the vast majority of the pandemic able to freely work, play, and gather with no need for mask wearing.

We also rank as the freest country in the world according to US libertarian think tanks. And rank in the top 10 happiest countries in the world in surveys (unlike America).

Maybe you should rethink your idea of what's scary? A competent government which values the lives of its citizens greatly and therefore stamps out a pandemic isn't scary, it's nice to have.

Your nation does have the advantage of being an island nation that can afford to severely curtail its interaction with the rest of the world. I'm not sure a continental country with significant global interests and responsibilities like the US could have achieved what NZ achieved without severe consequences to itself and to the world.

OtOH - it most certainly proves the point that isolation from people carrying the virus works and works quite well.

Yes I agree these things you mention are good. I was thinking how scary the rigorous tracking could become. What would happen to the people who tested positive? What if say 1.6 million tested positive?

Other island nations (e.g. UK, Ireland, Japan) didn't do so well, though I would grant you that illegal immigrant of infected people across your borders would probably be a problem if America had tried to go the route of keeping the virus out entirely.

Not quite sure what you mean by "can afford to severely curtail its interaction with the rest of the world". Tourism is a huge part of our economy, and obviously that sector was hugely impacted. Import and export of goods continues as normal. People can still leave the country as normal, and citizens can enter so long as they do a 2 week quarantine at the border. So I'm not sure how we 'can afford' this in a way others couldn't. Australia has taken a similar route as have a few other countries.

I'm not sure a continental country with significant global interests and responsibilities like the US could have achieved what NZ achieved without severe consequences to itself and to the world.
Again I think porous borders would be your biggest issue in this regard, but I'm not convinced there would be other repercussions.

The point of tracking when the cases are at a small number is to stop them becoming a large number. There would be little point in doing any tracking at all once 1.6 million test positive as you've already failed at that point to contain the virus. Once the virus is everywhere tracking doesn't tell you anything useful except "it's everywhere"!

And while I'm sure you can imagine some technologically scary ways of tracking, at least initially the tracking process was to employ a lot of people to get on the telephone to people who'd caught covid and ask them where they'd been in the last few days and then try and contact those locations. Scaling that up requires employing more and more people to do telephone calls and that simply wouldn't be plausible if millions of people were getting it.

By 'tracking and tracing' covid cases we aren't talking about big brother government spying on all its civilians in some kind of dystopian nightmare, we're talking about the government trying to keep track of what cities people who tested postive for covid live in and what locations they went to while they had covid, who should be prioritized for covid-testing, and construct a database about who caught covid from who and under what circumstances, to understand how covid is transmitted and understand what precautions need to be taken and understand what areas covid is in and what areas its not in, and understand how many new people are catching covid from any given infected person. Knowledge of where the cases are allows for focused responses in the specific area, so instead of having nationwide lockdowns, they can implement a single-city lockdown. In that sense it's about allowing more freedom for citizens by making what restrictions that do exist be far more targeted and limited only to those who need them.

(I don't know *how* widespread that is; I reside in probably one of the most progressive school districts outside of the West Coast or Massachusetts, and the schools opened here with little controversy, with a black superintendent leading the way).
I blinked at that, too. The only way I could make sense of it was by reading it as an extended chain of guilt by association … white supremacists opposed mask mandates, which was horrifyingly wrong, and vaccination, which was just as wrong, and promoted opening schools, which was right, given proper precautions (from the clicked through link to actual CDC recommendations in an otherwise worthless article a member chastised Jim for failing to read):

                            Key Points
                            1. Evidence suggests that many K-12 schools that have strictly implemented prevention strategies have been able to safely open for in-person instruction and remain open.
                            2. CDC’s K-12 operational strategy presents a pathway for schools to provide in-person instruction safely through consistent use of prevention strategies, including universal and correct use of masks and physical distancing.
                            3. All schools should implement and layer prevention strategies and should prioritize universal and correct use of masks and physical distancing.
                            4. Testing to identify individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination for teachers and staff provide additional layers of COVID-19 protection in schools.Key Points
                            5. Evidence suggests that many K-12 schools that have strictly implemented prevention strategies have been able to safely open for in-person instruction and remain open.
                            6. CDC’s K-12 operational strategy presents a pathway for schools to provide in-person instruction safely through consistent use of prevention strategies, including universal and correct use of masks and physical distancing.
                            7. All schools should implement and layer prevention strategies and should prioritize universal and correct use of masks and physical distancing.
                            8. Testing to identify individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination for teachers and staff provide additional layers of COVID-19 protection in schools.
.. so advocating for opening schools is a sign of white supremacy.

Kinda like having a mother means you’re a white supremacist: it’s necessary but not sufficient.

Well, considering I've been part of a sub-hub in our county that has vaccinated over 5,000 people per day, and has just recently shut down due to lack of demand....

And my own doctor advised me to wait, because I have already had Covid and sailed through it....

I went to Kaiser Permanente to refill my prescription and asked about getting a vaccination. The eyes of the woman I asked lit up as she smiled brightly and gave me a card with a number to call to set up an appointment. I don't know which of the vaccines they have but I guess I'll call tomorrow.
