It's also not an explanation that would apply to people like me, who hated Hillary, both because of her stealing the primary from Bernie and because she was so much a centrist corporate sell-out, that we wouldn't have considered a win by her to be a win for progressive goals.
So, overall, I'm not buying your explanation. Its predictions of who should have been angry and when, are wrong."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

Democrats and liberals went into this election with the level of certainty of getting married that a groom has on the wedding day while standing at the altar. Trump winning was the equivalent of the Bride leaving him at the altar. That's the level of certainty they had and then lost.

The liberals were upset at the ~5000 Trump scandals and Trump's ongoing incompetency. Not just because they wrongly predicted who would win an election. If you think the latter's the cause rather than the former, I'd say you can't have seen much liberal media coverage during Trump's time in office. So in general your explanation's just plain wrong."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

In the end, alot of the outrage was anger looking for something to manifest around. A clear example was the annual outrage over the Christmas decorations of Melania Trump. Or, you know the people who slut-shamed Melania. When the initial Anger became the Anchoring point, nothing good followed.

The media were daily accosted by Trump's denial of truth, invention of lie, lack of integrity and corruption, and just general incompetence, placing fealty above competence in nearly every appointment. Trump was everything the founding Fathers imagined when they strove to create a system of checks and balances in place to keep a rogue and corrupt man from stealing power and taking control of our government. And while they essentially worked, they were found many times to be inadequate to the task.
What we face now is that those checks and balances can only work if the legislative and judicial branches are themselves populated by people not beholden or under the power of such a person. And we are well underway towards destroying the ultimate effectiveness of that critical safeguard. With every trip to mar a largo followed by yet another legislator changing their story and falling in line with Trump's desired outcomes, we move one step closer to autocracy.
