Socialism is not one thing, it has morphed over the years. The modern left has been squarely against meritocracy for a while - that is why in the 90s we started with participation trophies. You can't have winners and losers. This radical form of egalitarianism seeks equal outcomes rather than equal opportunity.

My youngest daughter was a soccer coach (after "aging out" of youth soccer) when that whole "everybody gets a trophy" thing came into vogue. She would laugh at the fact that the 'commissioners' of the soccer league would stress that "we're not keeping score - there are no winners or losers" -- but every kid on both teams knew how many goals were scored, and by whom!
