Interestingly enough, it comes down to
A) were you in fear for your life
2) if the lawyer wants to go down that road "would a reasonable person under similar circumstances be in fear if his/her life"

In my experience, the prosecution always sizes up the jury pretty carefully before 2)

The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.
