For the sarcastically impaired the following is said in jest

Perhaps you consider them to be examples of various blossoming artistic endeavours.

Most of us know why they're there --- that's not what this thread was started for - I had suggested in another thread that Eider post the murals that he referenced, so as not to derail THAT thread.

And here you are derailing -- go away! Scat! Start your own "I'm SO SMART that I know everything about The Troubles" thread.

Perhaps you could ask eider to move the thread to the Arts board.

Excellent! Thanks for the pics. And, if I might kindly suggest, as thread starter, you have the right to insist that we stay on topic, and not have this devolve into a long raging debate about The Troubles.

I rather enjoy the pics. Question, though -- in the (Ulster?) ones, I see a red closed fist similar to what the Communists use -- is that intentional, or coincidental.

              I've been delayed today.
i do mean to look on Google Street to see which of those murals are still there, and what they might look like now.
N.I. seems to have changed a fair bit since the various factions were given acknowledgement and seats on the Stormont.

N.I. has commenced a level of devolution already, and if only it's majority would have wanted to remain in the EU then maybe some kind of full unity with Ireland might have taken place. But sadly, not so.......

Cow Poke ..... you twigged on the picture of the gates then.

It's actually on my bucket list to visit the UK, and particularly Scotland and Ireland, as that is from whence cometh my family, both on my side and my wife's.
We had planned to do this after my last trip to Israel, then Covid.

We're thinking about making an Ireland trip, but my wife is having difficulty getting a passport. Because she was married and divorced before she and I got together, the government is demanding some sort of divorce papers to prove her name change. She doesn't have any.

Awwww..... wife and I are going tomorrow to a local airport where you can get some kind of special TSA clearance for travel.

I think I said this before, but I used to get stopped EVERY SINGLE TIME at the security line and have to go through the (almost) anal exam.
One time, the TSA guy doing the scanning circled my boarding pass, and directed me to the horror line -- he seemed like a friendly type, so I leaned in and asked him "can you please tell me why I get screened EVERY SINGLE TIME?" He smiled and said, "sure" and pointed to my name on my boarding pass --- "your name on your boarding pass has your middle initial - your proof of Identification has your whole middle name".

That was it! I have breezed through every single time since!

My Dad served in WWII and was stationed, for a time, in Scotland - I would love to visit just to see where he was then. I have already visited the Air Force Base in California where he was stationed (Back then it was the Army Air Corps)

Long before 9/11, I managed to hold up a flight and make lots of people mad at me because I was a red flag. It must have been around 1996. I was travelling on business on a three-legged, single day hop, so I had one-way tickets (to Phoenix, to San Francisco, then to Los Angeles). No luggage. Single male travelling alone, and in my 30s. It was the last leg, from SF to LA, when they pulled me aside and grilled me for about 10 minutes. They held the flight for me, and I got the ugliest glares when I got on late. They all knew.

The most polite 'grilling' I ever had was in NYC when I was boarding El Al Airlines, and two Israeli intelligence people stopped me, very politely peppered me with questions "are you traveling for business or pleasure - is this your first time to Israel - are those your bags - have you packed them yourself and not had them out of your sight - do you know anybody in Israel - what Hotel...."
It's like they were taking turns firing questions, just watching reaction, not so much listening to my answers, then they wished me a good flight and a wonderful visit, and went on to the next conquest...

THAT, in my opinion, is how TSA should operate!

                              Give it a little time.

Do you know which parts of Ireland and Scotland your ancestors hailed from? It is pertinent for me to ask, what Creed, Denomination, Church did both of your ancestors follow? You might try to pin down locations districts etc.
And until then you can wander around the streets in 'street-view' as have been doing......

I've just 'google' visited the Ardoyne area of Belfast, one of the areas of highest density of Catholics. It looks as if this district is mostly rented homes owned by the Council and maybe this is why I have seen only a few murals, but the most prominent sign up everywhere is the one shown here of Fiona Ferguson, Councilor for the Ardoyne District, so maybe the ballot box has replaced the gun after all?

I'll PM you, as the area is actually my last name.
