  • Facebook Bans Australia From Sharing Or Reading News

Don't worry. This is not a problem. Facebook is a private company, they are allowed to decide what they want to allow on their platform, right?

Facebook said Thursday it would ban users in Australia from sharing or reading news articles on its site and bar anyone outside the country from seeing anything from an Australian news outlet, an aggressive move against a proposal to force the social media behemoth to pay the media for profiting off its content.

The company announced the abrupt move in a blog post just a day after the Australian government moved forward with a proposed law called the news media bargaining code. The provision would force search engines and social media companies to pay media outlets for using their content, a landmark measure that could bolster beleaguered publications that have struggled for a piece of the digital advertising pie.

The bill, which has been subject to months of brinkmanship and threats, passed in the Australian House of Representatives on Wednesday night and is expected to soon pass in the Senate. It could become law as early as next week.

“This is not the outcome we wanted, and it’s a step we take reluctantly,” Facebook said in a statement. “The proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it to share news content.”

Just goes to prove the only thing Facebook really cares about is making money.

This is not a problem with Facebook, but Australia. Their government is insane. They want to charge platforms for sharing news articles, so every time someone on facebook shares a news article to discuss, facebook would have to pay them a royalty. Even if the newspaper itself has a facebook page where it posts its own articles.

The only sane solution is to not allow anyone to post any articles from Australia on Facebook. Google bent to the pressure and worked out some sort of deal.

But this is NOT in the newspapers best interest. They WANT their articles shared as far and wide as possible. They get paid by advertising on the pages when people click through. And if people like them, they get new subscribers. They can even make people sign up by putting up a paywall. It's in their best interest to have their teasers and bits of articles quoted as far and wide as possible. It's like fishing.

It's not Facebook's fault. They're trying to play by the rules as they're written.
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

In a sense, yes. I don't use Facebook and I am not censored from getting Australian news.
