  • Chris Hedges on Unfettered Capitalism

Chris Hedges perfectly sums up the why America is going mad. In a shocking twist, unfettered capitalism and a populace foiled by illusions of political change have accelerated the collapse of the America.

This thread isn't for anyone who thinks Trump or Biden are the problem. The problem is deeper and has been festering far longer than they've been around.

So the guy who hosts a show on RT (Russia Today) is blathering about something that doesn't exist anywhere in the world -- battling straw men. Why should anyone care?

I'm always still in trouble again

"You're by far the worst poster on TWeb" and "TWeb's biggest liar" --starlight (the guy who says Stalin was a right-winger)
"Overall I would rate the withdrawal from Afghanistan as by far the best thing Biden's done" --Starlight
"Of course, human life begins at fertilization that’s not the argument." --Tassman

You think his assessment of the system is incorrect? Is capitalism too fettered, in your opinion?

He's raging against something that doesn't exist, so why should anyone care what he says? It's like complaining about the problems of unfettered vacations to Alpha Centauri.

A useful starting point would be to define "unfettered capitalism", explain how that definition applies to the United States, and why it's a problem.

I think he makes that point clearly enough in the video. If you don't want to watch it, that's fine.

Yeah, sorry, I could only take a few minutes of his self-important rambling about nothing set to a dark, brooding soundtrack before I tuned out. I skipped around to see if it got any better, but from what I saw, his commentary is just a series of bald assertions without offering anything to back them up other than his own self-proclaimed expertise (in fact, Hedges is a serial plagiarist). Frankly, I don't see anything in the video worth discussing.

Perhaps you could summarize the major points if you'd like discussion. Not everyone has time or ability to watch videos and parse them out, fact-check, etc.

I don't think you understand what unfettered capitalism is. I stopped at 7:50 because he was pretty much ranting on about a wide range of things, but had no particular point (maybe he summarized it at the end, I don't know). The only takeaway I got is when he said we don't live in a free market, but a type of cooperate socialism. And he's right, but that has nothing to do with unfettered capitalism, in fact, it's the exact opposite.

He explained what he meant by unfettered capitalism and ties it in with a broader social dysfunction in western culture. Watch only if you're interested. IDC.

But how is corporate socialism the exact opposite of unfettered capitalism? Corporate socialism is needed to sustain the economy when consumers decide to cancel. Without it, entire industries would be lost.

Redditors exploit Wall Street practice of shorting stocks:

Now rich elites want regulation of Wall Street and social media to avoid practice of inverse wealth transfer.

Unfettered capitalism is a metaphor for the insanity of the U.S. financial system.

Unfettered capitalism is just another word for laissez faire capitalism. Meaning no government or centralized control. Corporate socialism -- i.e. government or centralized controlled economy -- is the situation we're under now, where the central bank controls the market and essentially the economy via interest rates and QE, which benefits the financial sector more than everyone else. This is what he was criticizing

I was going to start a thread on this in economy section. It's crazy what's happening between billion dollar hedge funds and reddit traders. But this isn't what you think it is. This is actually the good guys (wallstreet vigilantes) beating the baddies (hedge fund vultures and parasites) in the financial market. The latter are the ones that always bailed-out by the central bank.
