  • Do Libertarians Support Open Borders?

I saw this, and rather than derail a thread, thought it was worth it's own thread...

Is this true? Do "many" libertarians support "open borders", and what does that mean?

    That is correct.

there are certainly some that don't but a large enough majority do, that it's part of the party platform as seen above(its not as divisive a party issue as abortion for example).

I work with a libertarian who does believe in open borders, let any one come in to work. But according to him we would have to end all welfare programs - across the board.

OK, so I'm curious -- how does that apply as to citizenship? Should they be granted citizenship? Earn it some way? Should they be allowed to vote? Participate in welfare programs?

          1. They can become citizens after going through a naturalization process, etc. Much like we have now.
          2. I'd definitely support that - some decent amount of civic volunteering or military service couldn't say, get them to the front of the line of the citizenship process.
          3. Nope. Not until (or if) they become citizens.
          4. No, I favor ending welfare programs as well, but even if we dont we need straight up long term citizenship requirements.

Thanks for your direct answers. Rather refreshing.

Yep. Or at the very least (and taking a more realistic look at the reality that at least for some time, welfare programs are nogoing anywhere), make welfare programs more strict to qualify, more short term and focusing ong etting people back on their feet, and most importantly, restricting it to only citizens.

On that, you sound like a Conservative!

Yeah, it's important to take the position as a whole as opposed to individual elements. Open borders would be one cog in a giant policy/agenda machine, not an individual light switch that gets turned on and off.

As I responded in that thread, I used to support open borders but the whole thing became abused way too much. I know a few other libertarians who feel the same way.

I'm always still in trouble again

A pendulum swing kind of thing?

Ah, the curse of being a Libertarian.

I've literally, on another forum, been accused on one thread of being a far-right extremist by a liberal poster, and then on another thread less than a minute later, labeled a socialist by a conservative poster

Understood! I, an Independent, am often accused of being a Republican because so many of my views line up so much more with them than with the Dems.

No, not so much. I am not part of the L libertarian party myself, actually (I was for a while but gave up my membership because I didnt agree with the way the leadership was running things and self-savotaging), and know many big and little L l libertarians who support open borders. It's more simply a personal thing on where on the spectrum you fall (much like the issue of abortion)
