Four of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) vessels "harassed" a U.S. warship on Tuesday near the Strait of Hormuz, a U.S. defense official said, amid Washington's concerns about Iran's posture in the Gulf and in the Syrian civil war.

The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said on Wednesday that two of the Iranian vessels came within 300 yards of the USS Nitze in an incident that was "unsafe and unprofessional."

The vessels harassed the destroyer by "conducting a high speed intercept and closing within a short distance of Nitze, despite repeated warnings," the official said.

IRGC, the Islamic Republic's praetorian guard, is suspicious of U.S. military activity near Iran's borders and appears to be sticking to a familiar posture in the Gulf that predates last year's nuclear accord between Iran and six world powers, including the United States.

The United States and other countries are concerned about Iran's support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, its ballistic missile program, and its backing for Shiite militias that have abused civilians in Iraq.

The U.S. defense official said that in Tuesday's incident the USS Nitze tried to communicate with the Iranian vessels 12 times, but received no response. It also fired 10 flares in the direction of two of the Iranian vessels.

"The Iranian high rate of closure... created a dangerous, harassing situation that could have led to further escalation, including additional defensive measures by Nitze," the official said.

    Easily fixed.

"Iranian vessels mysteriously vanish from Straits of Hormuth. US ships conducting training exercises in the vicinity said they have no idea what happened to them. 'must be some bermuda triangle like thing', said one sailor."

        A new incident...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. Navy ship fired three warning shots after an Iranian fast-attack craft approached and circled two U.S. Navy ships and a Kuwaiti vessel in the northern Gulf on Wednesday, CNN reported on Thursday.

It said the U.S. ship fired the shots into the water after the Iranian ship did not leave after a brief radio conversation, CNN said, citing U.S. officials. The United States on Wednesday had reported another incident in which it said Iranian vessels harassed a U.S. warship near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.

Source: Defense official: Iran confrontations with US Navy up 50 percent this year

Dangerous confrontations between Iranian and American warships in the Persian Gulf are up more than 50 percent in 2016 compared with this time last year, according to a U.S. defense official – despite the highly touted nuclear accord, as well as a recent $1.7 billion U.S. payment to Tehran.

The latest incidents of provocative Iranian behavior flared in the Persian Gulf earlier this week, including one filmed by the U.S. Navy. The video showed four Iranian gunboats from its Revolutionary Guard Corps coming within 300 yards of USS Nitze, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.

Hopefully we've warned Iran that this won't be tolerated and the next time we'll do more than firing warning shots -- unless we want a repeat of the USS Cole incident or something worse. But with this Administration it is possibly more likely we apologized for firing the warning shots.

Why are US ships off the coast of Iran? Is your own side of the world not big enough for you?

As Wikipedia puts it the Strait of Hormuz "provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is one of the world's most strategically important choke points ... About 20% of the world's petroleum (about 35% of the petroleum traded by sea) passes through the strait, making it a highly important strategic location for international trade." We patrol it in order to ensure that it stays open what with Iran often threatening to close it (and making efforts to do so during the Iran-Iraq War in an incident referred to as the Tanker War).

New Zealand imports 97% of its oil with over 60% coming through the Gulf of Hormuz.

                  You're welcome.

Perhaps the Royal New Zealand Navy would like to take over the task of keeping the trade routes free.

Definitely a no thank you. Git your stupid ships and your stupid army and your stupid military bases out of the rest of the world, and stop causing wars and inspiring terrorists. You're actively harming everyone, destabilizing the world, threatening world peace, and causing terrorism. You're just complete idiots if you think what you're doing is good.

Perhaps you'd all like to purchase Alberta or Saskatchewan oil instead of Gulf oil.

No worries about sea routes being shut down by Canada. And the oil is clean and we are human-rights good.

                            Eh?

While in general I think we should be phasing out the use of fossil fuels and moving to renewable resources, certainly buying more oil from Canada and less from the middle east should be on our to-do list.
