As usual, there's a lot more to the story that CNN is not telling us.
Peter Tobin, the U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio, gave the initial account of what happened the day of the shooting, but said a week later that he had acted prematurely.
That reversal adds even more uncertainty in the narrative of what happened.
As part of Tobin's remarks on Dec. 4, he said that Goodson waved a gun at a Franklin County sheriff's deputy, Meade, as he drove by in a plain vehicle.
He also said the SWAT deputy confronted Goodson, who had by this point gotten out of his vehicle. The deputy told the gunman to drop his handgun, a command heard by at least one witness, Tobin said.
When Goodson did not drop his handgun, Tobin said Meade shot him.

Goodson, a 23-year-old Black man who was on the doorstep of his grandmother's Columbus home, was shot multiple times last week by Meade, who was looking for someone else as part of a U.S. Marshals task force. His family says he was carrying sandwiches. Meade says Goodson was holding a weapon.
"At no time did Deputy Meade mistake a sandwich for a gun," attorneys for the Franklin County Sheriff's deputy said Thursday. "Mr. Goodson pointed his gun at Deputy Meade. There has been confirmation that our client gave verbal commands for Mr. Goodson to drop the gun."

On March 19, 2015, Otis Byrd, 54, was found hanging from a tree in Port Gibson, Mississippi. The FBI and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are investigating the incident, and the NAACP is asking the Justice Department to get involved.
Although racial lynching is often viewed as a thing of the past, there have been several cases where Blacks have been lynched in modern times.
Note that the source is hardly a right wing, racist outfit and that the DOJ is controlled by the Obama Administration which, like yourself, tends to see racism around every corner. It is not unheard of for people to go off and commit suicide by hanging themself.
Originally posted by shunyadragon View PostHere are five horrific modern-day lynchings of Black people by the hands of racists.
It appears that racism had nothing to do with it. They were close friends since childhood and had been working together earlier that evening hanging sheet rock. Several years earlier Finley shot and killed another friend and was convicted of manslaughter. McClelland furnished a false alibi for Finley, testifying before a grand jury that Finley was with him at the time the shooting occurred. That lie under oath earned McClelland a conviction for aggravated perjury.
As the Texas Ranger, Stacy McNeal, who led an investigation in the case said, "I don't see how it was racial, being as how they were good friends." What the accusation apparently was is that they got drunk together and got into a fight over who was sober enough to drive. So it appears that McClelland may have been a victim of drunken rage more than racial animosity.

This was indeed the result of a hate crime. Nobody is denying that they happen. The group went out intentionally looking for trouble (they planned on throwing bottles at blacks) and spotted Anderson who they thought was trying to steal a car (it was his own car that he had lost the keys for) and proceeded to beat and rob him with Dedmon then deliberately running him down with his Jeep killing him.

Wright died of an accidental drug overdose. His mother refused to accept that and claimed that he never used drugs, that they were pumped into her son and he had been murdered. His sister agreed. A toxicology report prepared by a Lee Ann Grossberg an independent pathologist hired by the family agreed with the official autopsy report with both showing long-term cocaine use by Wright.
Before the examination Grossberg held a press conference where said that she had "a high index of suspicion this was a homicide" but then after her examination she agreed with the state examiner that Wright's death was an accidental overdose.
This is corroborated by a series of text messages between Wright and Hadnot, which reveal that Wright bought cocaine, methamphetamine and Xanax from Hadnot on the day he died and regularly before that. The text sent by Wright to Hadnot on the day he died read: "Bro 1 gino and a 20 and 3 handles," which police say meant that Wright was asking for a gram of cocaine, $20 worth of meth, and 3 Xanax pills. Those three drugs were found in Wright's system.
Hadnot (seen below) admitted that he sold half-grams of cocaine to Wright on a daily basis.
Further, according to Wright's wife Lauren, on the day her husband disappeared, she told a deputy she hadn't observed anything unusual that day but then later called back and recanted her statement. She informed the deputy that Wright had "been acting very strange lately" and that she "suspected" he was "on something." Another witness said that they spoke to Wright in his or her driveway on the day that he died and "found him extremely disoriented and unable to communicate clearly" before telling him to leave.

Lacy was despondent over the death of his great-uncle (the funeral was the day before). His family acknowledges that the death of his relative caused him to start talking about death and asking questions about mortality that they said had never heard him talk about before and told the state medical examiner that he was depressed over it. Then on the day that Lacy died his 31-year-old girlfriend had broken up with him.
And it wasn't a midnight run. According to his best friend's mother, Teresa Edwards, she spotted Lacy walking along the dirt road while heading to the local grocery store. Since it was getting dark and he was alone she stopped to ask him if he needed a ride. He replied, no ma'am, I'm just thinking."
All of this led investigators to conclude that he took his own life. And even the pastor of his church, Rev. Gregory Taylor, said that, "We know suicide is possible" although he finds it hard to accept.
And yes, there were people who had disapproved of the relationship he had been having -- chiefly his own family. Claudia Lacy, his mother, said "I was shocked, disappointed. I also, initially told him how I felt - that I did not approve of it." But it seems that most of the objections had nothing whatsoever to do with race but with the difference in ages.
Still, there are questions that remain. His family says that Lacy wasn't wearing the same shoes that he had left the house wearing and that they weren't his, although it seems rather odd that someone who murdered him would changes his shoes. They also say that the belts that were used to fashion the noose did not belong to him, but the corner and medical examiner, Hubert Kinlaw, says that they appear to have been dog leashes.
Probably the biggest problem is that the autopsy wasn't as thorough as it could have been but AFAICT the pathologist that the NAACP hired to examine the report didn't find any hard evidence of homicide but rather was critical of it's incompleteness.
So the cases you provided include a suicide, an incident of drunken rage between lifelong friends, a drug overdose and a likely suicide with only one being the result of an actual hate crime. And as I said, nobody denies that hate crimes take place and that includes ones committed by blacks against whites like those committed in Chicago a couple years ago where black teens hunted whites on the beach by Lake Michigan in order to attack them. Local officials refused to call them hate crimes even though the perpetrators were specifically looking for white victims.
This reluctance to call black on white violence a hate crime has become widespread whereas there seems to be no such trouble labeling any violent act committed by whites against blacks as hate crimes. Numerous instances can be pointed to including a brutal attack on a white family in Florence, Alabama by a group of 20 to 30 black juveniles led by a 28 year old screaming "Get that White!" (they first attacked the 14 year old son and then the father when he tried to protect him).
Shortly after the death of Trayvon Martin over a dozen incidents of what were termed "flash mobs" attacked and beat whites saying while saying that it was in revenge for Martin's death. In one incident in Norfolk, Virginia a white couple was attacked and beaten by a group of up to 100 black juveniles (although most of them just stood around cheering) and the local police simply told the victims to get in their car and leave, refused to take statements from witnesses or even their names saying that the attackers were juveniles there wasn't really much that they could do.
As I said hate crimes do happen. Both by whites against blacks and by blacks against whites. Both need to be cracked down on and prosecuted when they take place. But this is nothing like what was happening during the period of Jim Crow laws, public lynchings and when the KKK held a great deal of power in some regions despite your suggestion in another post that things might have in some ways actually gotten worse during the 1960s through 1990s.Last edited by rogue06; 12-12-2020, 06:28 PM.
