  • Trump declined to buy enough vaccines for all Americans

    Named, on the record source

    https://thehill.com/policy/healthcar...pfizer-vaccine

Former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, now a member of the Pfizer board of directors, said Tuesday that the pharmaceutical giant offered the Trump administration the chance to buy additional doses of its coronavirus vaccine multiple times, but that officials turned down the offers.

The comments from Gottlieb confirm a report in The New York Times, which on Monday revealed that additional doses of the Pfizer vaccine, beyond the 100 million already purchased, may not be available in the U.S. until June because they were committed to other countries after the Trump administration passed on them.

"Pfizer did offer an additional allotment coming out of that [Michigan] plant, basically the second quarter allotment, to the United States government multiple times, and as recently as after the interim data came out and we knew this vaccine looked to be effective," Gottlieb said on CNBC.

This will lead to deaths. Even if there are other possible sources for these vaccines we already know that Pfizer is very effective. There is no reason not to buy as much as we can get from Pfizer and then other sources if there is a need as they become available.

So even in the one thing Trump did right wrt covid (operation warp speed ) he may have messed up. I can understand not wanting to put all the eggs in one basket, so it was likely not just a matter of being negligent - the point was to have multiple arms working on the problem. But you'd think it would have been structured so the US would have first dibs on more doses should the timing wrt other vaccines been such that we would want to/need to buy them.

Whew. The Americans will not be the guinea pigs. Sorry to those in the UK who are starting this vaccination there.

Let's see in a couple years whether Americans should take this. Until then, the best treatments are Vitamin D and Ivermectin. Pass on this good news.

Well, thanks for passing up extra doses so the rest of the world will be able to get vaccinated, too!

Those of us in other countries are grateful to Trump for giving us the opportunity to get injected! So appreciate the lack of geocentrism by Trump, but apparently quite obvious in his haters!

Honestly, do you actually think about what you are saying when you bring up stupidity like the op?

We already have millions of useless doses of Hydroxychloroquine so he's hardly opposed to spending money on less than proven cures. This whole thing is just a cluster from top to bottom.

There's probably some other company that Trump or his cronies have invested in, that wouldn't make as much money if we bought lots more doses from Pfizer.

Last I checked there are at least 2 other companies around the same readiness as Pfizer. Do you have evidence that he rejected those as well as this? Or perhaps might there be a simpler explanation in that they are spreading out which vaccines and which companies so not all eggs are in one basket in case, for example, they prove to not work decently or have future lasting effects, etc.?

in any case, feel free to take mine to protect yourself from the big Scary 'rona that has a 99 percent survival rate. Let me know how that goes.

God point, It just might lead to deaths.

This administration with trump in the lead are simply not up to the task. Six more weeks and they are all gone - can't come soon enough.

I have to remember that you do not appreciate peer reviewed medical studies at all.

Indeed. That is all Big Pharma has offered for Cancer.

I think you favor death from covid-19 over effective treatments.

Why would we need to buy enough vaccines for all Americans when all Americans are not necessarily going to want them?

And, of course, if the President did agree to buy a huge overstock then the headlines would read "Trump Selfishly Stockpiles Vaccine For US Depriving Rest Of World".

Good point. With Republicans declining to be vaccinated, we'll probably have enough.

Can't really have too much, since we can always pass on any we don't need to the rest of the world.

That was pretty much the reaction from the usual sources here when it came to masks and other medical supplies.

Trump claimed to be the president of "America First." Trump failed to protect us from the virus on the promise that a vaccine would save the day. You know he made the wrong call here.
