Article dates from 2016 and has embedded video of the announcement with Trump present.

Last October, at a rally in Las Vegas, a friend of Donald Trump's introduced the mogul-turned-candidate with a story about Trump's generosity.

"You won’t hear this in the media, but Donald gave $20 million to the St. Jude children’s home. Twenty million dollars," said Phil Ruffin, the owner of the Treasure Island casino, which was the site of the rally.

The crowd cheered. Trump mouthed "Thank you" twice and waved.

"He could have used that $20 million for television ads, but he decided to give with children with cancer," Ruffin said. "That’s Donald Trump."

And I agree. His gift to St. Jude's does embody Donald Trump -- stolen valor.

As usual, the article does not deliver what is promised in the headline. It's not "We found that Trump didn't donate the money." Rather, "We couldn't confirm that he did," so it remains an open question.

No, it hasn't been a trend. EVERY presidential candidate for a long time (since the '70s?) has released their taxes. Trump is the first to refuse. After, of course, repeatedly lying about it.
America - too good to let the conservatives drag it back to 1950.

You're missing the point. In 2016 the gift could not be verified because we didn't have Trump's taxes. Now we do so we can confirm that the gift was not made.

No, we can only confirm that it wasn't a personal donation. Trump could have donated it through other means.

The New York Times has obtained tax-return data extending over more than two decades for Mr. Trump and the hundreds of companies that make up his business organization, including detailed information from his first two years in office.

So digging into this a little more and looking at the video, it seems that Trump never made the claim himself. The man Ruffin said it, and Trump just smiled and waved to the crowd. I suppose he could have jumped in and embarrassed the fellow by saying, "I'm afraid you're wrong, sir, that was my son, Eric, who donated the money."

So really, just more "much ado about nothing".

No, because then Ruffin would have said "The Trump family gave..."

Right, but it was Ruffin making the claim, not Donald Trump.

Ruffin either just made this up or he was told what to say by someone. It seems obvious that the person who would have told Ruffin was Trump.

Why didn't Trump correct the record in the following days? Isn't that still a form of dishonesty to let false information spread?

Of course, when the facts are against you, just invent a conspiracy theory. It's the liberal way.

There hasn't been a consistent #, but since Reagan it's generally been 5. McCain only did 2 years. Romney did 2 years and got lied about. Trump took the next step and released none. So from 5-2-0 is a trend. It's a downward trend, and one that makes sense, as I stated earlier.

If democrats/liberals are going to do immoral things to try and get tax returns, it makes sense to not release them, let the democrats/liberals do the immoral stuff, and point that out.

In the case of the NYT leaker, there's no whistleblower protection. I say they find the culprit, and punish them to the extent the law/regulations allow.

How many years' worth did democrats release in that time? One incident of taxes being lied about (Romney) does not indicate a trend and does not justify Trump's repeated lies and failure to do something that every candidate for the last 50 years has done.

And, of course, nobody has ever had to do anyting to try to get tax returns - until Trump. So to claim it makes sense to not release them in itself makes no sense.

Harry Reid went onto the senate floor and straight up lied about Romney's taxes. That alone is enough to not release them and let democrats lie about them, then point out that they are making unfounded claims.

Sorry, but misconduct by ONE person in ONE election is not justification for breaking a precedent that has survived fifty years - particularly when your own financial past is so shady.

I mean, Harry Reid straight up lied in order to manufacture outrage against Romney. The more important question is given the Democrats propensity to do so, why would ANY republican candidate release their tax returns?
That could be one reason. But it's actually easier to lie about his finances if he keeps his taxes hidden. Once they are available for anyone to examine, they can actually help to refute such lies.

More likely, Trump's reason is that his taxes would reveal the lying he's been doing about his finances. Having those lies exposed would probably hurt. In particular, many voters aren't going to want a president who owes hundreds of millions to foreign interests.
