The Democrat members inexplicably placed pictures of themselves in their chairs in what I assume was a symbolic gesture, but I have no idea what it was supposed to symbolize.

No, they put pictures in their chairs of people who would be hurt by what they assert would be Judge Barrett's rulings on the supreme court.

Ah, okay, that makes only slightly more sense.

At any rate, it simply led to a unanimous vote in favor of Judge Barrett.

            • Has anyone posted on the “handmaid” thing?
A 2010 People of Praise directory states that she held the title of “handmaid,” a leadership position for women in the community, according to a directory excerpt obtained by The Washington Post. Also, while in law school, Barrett lived at the South Bend home of People of Praise’s influential co-founder Kevin Ranaghan and his wife, Dorothy, who together helped establish the group’s male-dominated hierarchy and view of gender roles. The group was one of many to grow out of the charismatic Christian movement, which sought a more intense and communal religious experience by embracing such practices as shared living, faith healing and speaking in tongues.

Yes, people have mentioned that the traditional title used is similar to a recently popularized book/series, and as such, there is an implied guilt by association there. It's pretty much a bit subtle religious bigotry.

What about it? The term "handmaid" now tends to have more negative connotations than it did in the past due to it shifting its meaning a little, as various words do over time. They dropped the usage of the term "handmaid" as a result of the shifting meaning.

Not only is FF making veiled (and not so veiled) terrorist threats, but he actually has delusions of a Handmaid scenario being thrust upon the country with Barret's nomination. Delusions based on fictional tales and terrorist threats... that's a pretty disturbing combo.

Well, I would not be part of a church or group that had that as an article of faith. But I have no problem with other people holding that interpretation of Scripture.

Right. Pentecostals would probably tend to relate it to Acts 2:18, and Catholics would probably tend to relate it to Luke 1:38 and 1:48. Neither carries any intrinsic negative baggage.

Barrett was trustee at private school with anti-gay policies

Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett served for nearly three years on the board of private Christian schools that effectively barred admission to children of same-sex parents and made it plain that openly gay and lesbian teachers weren't welcome in the classroom.

... The AP spoke with more than two dozen people who attended or worked at Trinity Schools, or former members of People of Praise. They said the community's teachings have been consistent for decades: Homosexuality is an abomination against God, sex should occur only within marriage and marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

A 2018-19 enrollment agreement obtained by the AP says "the only proper place for human sexual activity is marriage, where marriage is a legal and committed relationship between one man and one woman." It goes on to say that activities such as "fornication, pornography, adultery and homosexual acts, and advocating or modeling any of these behaviors" are at odds with the school's core beliefs.

                              • The bigger picture:
Regardless of the outcome of the election, the Supreme Court has already entered a new era. Dahlia Lithwick is joined by Heather Cox Richardson for a big-picture conversation about what that means: minority rule and the court’s role, past and present, in changing visions of democracy.
