While increasing the availability of birth control has been shown to decrease the demand for abortions (if you can reduce unintended pregnancies you cut back on the demand for abortions), it seems that they simply tacked on legalizing abortions on to this and then attributed the drop in abortions caused by making birth control more widely available to legalizing abortions as well.

And speaking of unintended pregnancies and abortion ... there was a pretty large scale study conducted recently with the results published in the British medical journal The Lancet that disclosed that only 48% of unintended pregnancies get aborted in countries where abortion is illegal in contrast to 69% in countries where it is legal. This indicates that many women carry unwanted pregnancies to term in places where abortion is illegal which sharply contradicts any contention that legalizing abortion causes the number of abortions to drop

And even if it is legal, a study in the late '90s estimated that if public funding of abortion were to be cut roughly 25% of low-income women who otherwise would have aborted their child if the taxpayers footed the bill would instead give birth to the child. This again suggests tighter restrictions do not lead to an increase in abortions.

Further, after Texas passed legislation in 2013 restricting abortion, which forced the closure of 19 of the 41 clinics in the state, the abortion rate dropped by 13% the following year.

Also, I recall a study from about 20 years ago that found that legalizing abortion in Spain had no affect on the rate of abortions. The only change was that Spanish women didn't have to go to neighboring country to get it done.

What the left overlooks is that polls conduct over the past couple decades have revealed that it is women more than men who want to see increased restrictions on abortions.

A new report from Guttmacher suggests an upward trend in women trying to self-induce; the organization's latest survey on abortion rates, from 2017, found that 18% of nonhospital facilities said they had treated at least one person for an attempted self-induced abortion, up from 12% when the data were last collected, in 2014.

Susan Yanow, with the international reproductive advocacy group Women Help Women, is training activists from around the country to provide information about self-induced abortion. She said one project that focuses on self-induced abortion has seen its Web traffic spike in the past couple of years, especially around the time of the confirmation of President's Trump's most recent Supreme Court nominee.

"There was a huge jump during the Kavanaugh hearings, when I think people started to really realize that access to clinic-based abortion might be going away in many places," Yanow said. "There has been steady growth even since last summer, when those hearings were taking place."

I'm sure your tourism industry is grateful...

The tourism industry was initially very upset with the borders being closed, despite people pointing out to them that because people here would have to take their holidays locally rather than internationally that the numbers of increased local tourism would roughly balance out the decreased international tourism. Now that the tourism industry has had some experience of this happening in practice they appear to be less upset because they've discovered those people were right.
