A British MP has died after being shot and stabbed in her constituency in northern England.

Labour MP Jo Cox was attacked as she prepared to hold an drop-in clinic for constituents in Birstall, near Leeds.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has paid tribute to Ms Cox, saying Britain has lost an MP with great passion and a huge heart.

"This is absolutely tragic and dreadful news. My thoughts are with Jo's husband Brendan and the two children, and their wider family. We've lost a great star."

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "We have lost a much loved colleague, a real talent and a dedicated campaigner for social justice and peace. But they [Cox's family] have lost a wife and a mother, and our hearts go out to them.

A 77-year-old man also received minor injuries.
A 52-year-old man has been arrested by police.
Ms Cox, 41, was left bleeding on the footpath after the attack. She was taken to hospital by air ambulance, but later died.

"Police were called to a report of an incident on Market Street, Birstall, where a woman in her 40s had suffered serious injuries," says a West Yorkshire Police spokesman.

"Armed officers attended and a 52-year-old man was arrested in the area."

Campaigning has been suspended by both sides of the EU referendum debate as a mark of respect.

Here are some reported details about the attacker:-

The man being held in connection with the death of MP Jo Cox has been named as Thomas Mair, who was described as a “loner” with a history of mental health problems who had previously subscribed to a far-right magazine.
Mair, 52, who was arrested by armed officers shortly after the attack, had spoken about receiving “psychotherapy and medication”, and was described by his younger brother as having “a history of mental illness”.
Despite being born in Kilmarnock, Scotland, a decade-old website posting identified Mair as a subscriber to S. A. Patriot, a South African magazine that was published by the pro-apartheid group, the White Rhino Club.
The club describes the magazine’s editorial stance as being against “multi-cultural societies” and “expansionist Islam”. A blog post attributed to the group, dated January 2006, described Mair as “one of the earliest subscribers and supporters of S. A. Patriot.”

Suspect appears to be nutter with extreme right wing ideology.
