  • Falcon 9 failure.

Falcon 9 suffered a failure shortly after liftoff this morning on it's way to resupply the ISS.

    Elon Musky
There was an overpressure event in the upper stage liquid oxygen tank. Data suggests counterintuitive cause.

So, we're even more dependent on the Russians?

Nah, these things happen in space flight. No launch system is without failures and Space-X has had a good track record so far.

      We'll learn from this.

Musk must be ticked, he was hoping this one would be the one to correctly be able to land again.

If you're going to be in this kind of a game you have to be ready for these accidents. No launch system was without flaws; not the Atlas, not the Titan, not the Soyuz, the Shuttle, the Ariane rockets, or anything.

            This one NEVER failed me!

(seriously, it's obvious that the more complex the system, and the more we expect it to do, the greater the chance for something to go wrong - I just had to keep a fresh rubber band in my plane)

Isn't this the third failure in a row?

No. It's the first time the Falcon-9 has failed.

The other failures they've had are returning the rocket to the ground in a re-usable state and that is because that is still being developed.

Time for Pilot Wisdom.... an acceptable landing is any landing you can walk away from. a good landing is when you can actually use the plane again.

That would be the problem with their landing attempts to date. they've smacked the barge too hard and ended with a biggish bang.

We're hoping for the day when rocket launches become more routine, even if they'll always be spectacular. This was a hard reminder that we're not there yet. So far they have no idea why it blew up that they've decided to share. I don't think this will be a setback for them, they've earned a chance by the Air Force and NASA. What little has been revealed indicates that it wasn't the first stage that blew up, but the second stage, as the first stage was almost completely empty, and the pressure spike was seen just before the RUD (Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly event) in the oxygen tank in the second stage.

Some say that they can make out a small bit from the Dragon capsule breaking off and striking the rocket just before the explosion.

Looking forward to the next launch, and for another attempt at landing a first stage rocket vertically as they've been trying to. Hopefully it'll blow up for a different reason, as Elon Musk puts it.
