Natural Science 301 Guidelines

This is an open forum area for all members for discussions on all issues of science and origins. This area will and does get volatile at times, but we ask that it be kept to a dull roar, and moderators will intervene to keep the peace if necessary. This means obvious trolling and flaming that becomes a problem will be dealt with, and you might find yourself in the doghouse.

As usual, Tweb rules apply. If you haven't read them now would be a good time.

    Is there a reasonably convenient way to calculate or estimate 20th and 80th percentiles if I know 10th, 90th, and 50th?

    For example, given 10th = 1.88, 90th = 4.00, and 50th = 3.00

    20th = ?

    80th = ?

      If you assume a Gaussian distribution, then it can be done. Whether it's convenient or not depends on how good you are at math.

        Upon further reflection, I don't think the example you gave could be a Gaussian distribution, since the difference between the 50th and 90th percentiles would be the same as the difference between the 50th and 10th percentiles.

        So I don't think there is enough information to calculate the 20th and 80th percentiles.

          Thanks. It's been too many decades since I did that kind of stuff. At this point, it's beyond my reach, even if I wanted to try.

            Yes, I noticed that asymmetry, and wondered if it would be an issue. :-(

              No. You'd also need to know the shape of the distribution. A Gaussian distribution and a flat distribution could have the same 10th/50th/90th percentiles, but very different 20th/80th percentiles.
