This is an open forum area for all members for discussions on all issues of science and origins. This area will and does get volatile at times, but we ask that it be kept to a dull roar, and moderators will intervene to keep the peace if necessary. This means obvious trolling and flaming that becomes a problem will be dealt with, and you might find yourself in the doghouse.

As usual, Tweb rules apply. If you haven't read them now would be a good time.

AIUI, from purely a medical point of view, optimal pooping is roughly once per day. With low throughput, food in a pill, meals, the non-digested residue (and there’s always some) remains in the gut and soon becomes toxic.

That, coupled with the inevitable chronic constipation, will make for a crew with sub-optimum efficiency and a less than sunny disposition

What you described is obviously not optimum if it results in an inefficient crew. Perhaps you're confusing "minimal" with "optimum".

Perhaps I didn’t express it clearly enough. It wouldn’t be the first time. From a medical standpoint, digestive throughput should be roughly once per day. This prevents the build up of toxic residues in the gut, which should always be avoided.

Highly refined, low residue meals, of the kind that will reduce the volume of digestive throughput, and frequency of pooping, will necessarily slow the passage of toxic residue through the gut and quickly lead to sub-optimum crew performance.

I believe what is getting at is not how often but how much.

And I've heard once to twice a day.

I'm always still in trouble again

For the average human. Astronauts are by no means "average humans", nor are they treated accordingly with regards to diet, and much research goes into that.

And the "optimum" would be a balance that takes that into consideration.

Aren't there organisms that can eat poop and then be eaten by something rlsr? Can you have an ecosystem in a spaceship? Wasn't there a biosphere experiment that failed?
