This area will and does get volatile at times, but we ask that it be kept to a dull roar, and moderators will intervene to keep the peace if necessary. NASA flies a helicopter on Mars, the first time an aircraft has flown on another planet
Small, four-pound helicopter reached an altitude of about 10 feet in what NASA called a ‘Wright brothers moment'

For those who have problems with WaPo's paywall, MSN reprints it: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/techn...et/ar-BB1fO3Gl

The Atlantic also had an interesting piece concerning it: No, You’re Crying About a Helicopter on Mars

I'm hoping for better video soon, but I'm all the way okay with someone beating me to it.

For whatever reason, the local Houston stations were downplaying the expectations and pretty much declaring this mission dead.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

It will be interesting to see if they cover this tonight, after pretty much writing it off as a loss.

Not going to be much for a 10 second flight. Google "ingenuity" and "NASA" and then click on the animated copter in the Wiki entry.

NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Succeeds in Historic First Flight
              .
Altimeter data indicate Ingenuity climbed to its prescribed maximum altitude of 10 feet (3 meters) and maintained a stable hover for 30 seconds. It then descended, touching back down on the surface of Mars after logging a total of 39.1 seconds of flight.

Interesting. One of the videos I've seen has part of your second one you posted and is 11 seconds long purporting to show the flight

Check it again and see if it's just an image on the ground, and then an image in the air, and then an image on the ground again. I don't think there's actual video available yet, but I'm hoping they caught continuous frames and are planning to use up the needed bandwidth to get it back to Earth.

No, you don't have permission to add weapons.

Pffft. Like a rogue ever cares about permission must less asks for it.
