  • Another "Big Five" or "Five Factor" personality thread

The other is in the Lobby. I'm copying my posts in that thread here.

Jordan Peterson is a big fan of the Big Five. The one he uses/recommends uses the acronym "OCEAN" -- Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism. It rather pointedly does NOT include an "intellect" aspect. It views personality traits as distinct from intellect, and in fact certain personality traits can limit the success one might be expected to achieve based on actual measures of intellect such as IQ.

I took the "Truity" version of the OCEAN Big Five on my birthday back in 2018. It was pretty darned accurate. I'll try to attach it.

    ...

Nope, can't do it. Your system won't allow me to attach an .htm file.

    Here's a summary:

    Openness -- 52% -- "Moderate."

    Conscientiousness -- 20% -- "Low."

    Extraversion (sic) -- 37% -- "Low."

    Agreeableness -- 62.5% -- "Moderate."

    Neuroticism -- 85% -- "High."

Reviving this zombie because I retook the test, this time at JP's own site. (Yes, I paid the $10.)

    O -- Openness to experiences -- Moderately Low, 27th %ile

Intellect -- Typical / Average, 47th %ile [NOT related to "IQ"]

    Openness -- Low, 17th %ile

    C -- Conscientiousness -- Exceptionally low, 0th %ile

    Industriousness -- Exceptionally low, 0th %ile

    Orderliness -- Exceptionally low, 1st %ile

    E -- Extraversion -- Very low, 6th %ile

    Enthusiasm -- Typical / Average, 41st %ile

    Assertiveness -- Exceptionally low, 1st %ile

    A -- Agreeableness -- High, 85th %ile

    Compassion -- Moderately high, 77th %ile

    Politeness -- High, 85th %ile

    N -- Neuroticism -- Very High, 91st %ile

    Withdrawal -- Exceptionally high, 97th %ile

    Volatility -- Moderately high, 68th %ile

WRT the 2018 test, I was surprised at *how* high was my Neuroticism, and *how* low was my Conscientiousness.

WRT the 2022 test, I was surprised that those two are even *more* extreme, and that my Openness and especially my Agreeableness had changed.

I'm reading through the rather detailed descriptions and explanations that accompany the report. Many things -- probably even most -- are really spot-on, but others not so much.

      Conscientousness: 65%
      Extraversion: 12.5%
      Agreeableness: 65%
      Neuroticism: 87.5%

I'm not sure why it only gave Sparko three of those, but I got five results.

Probably because most similar personality tests are like that. I've heard this one has real scientific backing, but I haven't looked into it any further.

I don't trust any of them. I especially dislike it when churches use such things to "identify spiritual gifts" - as one of my bible study classes did. It reminds me too much of junk like horoscopes, trying to pigeon hole people into neat little boxes.

The basic test is freely available several places. Some of them charge a fee for analysis of the results.

At UnderstandMyself, you have to pay to even take the test. That's because it's part of their ongoing research, so you're only supposed to take it once, at least within any relatively short period of time. That way statistical analysis of the results is at least somewhat meaningful. Supposedly, when you get your percentile rankings there, you're compared to a thousand or more unique individuals.

They also provide a crap-ton of description and explanation for each of the Five Factors, tailored to where you fall on the spectrum.

According to Jordan Peterson, the science behind it is as solid as that behind IQ.

I think that's unusual. Theoretically, all five are independent, but in practice, according to Peterson, Conscientiousness and Neuroticism usually have a close inverse relationship, as in my case. I think it's probably unusual to be that high in neuroticism and but also above average in Conscientiousness.

So, it is overrated in general?

I had not heard that before, but it is not surprising for me to get results on a test that are unusual. Even the IQ test I took got some abnormal results. Usually when a person has one category in which they have a high IQ this is a trend among all categories. For me, I had a 125 on my verbal skills, which is above average. My perceptual reasoning was high average at 105, however my processing speed and working memory are only 92 which is low average.

I know more about the Meyer's-Briggs test and the connections it has to Jungian psychology*. There is a test by 16 personalities that takes the OCEAN method, but gives it the Jungian names of extroversion/introversion, feeling/thinking, judging/perceiving, sensing/intuition, and adds turbulent and another one that I can't remember. I know it starts with the letter A.

*Which funnily enough Jung thought Tarot readings were useful as long as "properly interpreted". He saw the cards as archetypes. Archetypes and the "collective unconsciousness" are important concepts in his teachings.
