Home Economics 101

Welcome to the Home Ec Section. Matters of the family sometimes bring joy and other times bring grief. But it is never trivial: Family matters! Feel free to discuss topics such as the sanctity of marriage; the awesome responsibility of raising children; the struggles of communication problems; the grief of losing a loved one; or anything else that relates to the home and family. However, due to the more personal nature of this section, I ask that you would be especially thoughtful of the readers' feelings. My earnest hope and prayer is that the discussions in this section will help families grow in the love of Christ.

But remember, always play by the rules: here

  • Expiration Dates on Food

My wife seems to think that somehow food -- a wedge of cheese or a can of soup or a couple of steaks -- inherently knows its exact expiration date, and becomes unfit for human consumption EXACTLY on that date.

I tend to think those are dates that are merely designed to protect the manufacturer's backsides, and the food is so loaded with preservatives (in most cases) that it will last LONG AFTER the alleged expiration.

Do you consume food AFTER it allegedly "expires"?

Depends on what it is, and what preservatives were used. Still, I would at least do a smell test.

Your first choice doesn't really make sense...and is essentially the same as the last one...The question asked is if we eat the food after the expiration date, the first choice says Heck no,...?

Ah, I had the poll title in the negative --- something like "do you throw it away when...", and changed it, but didn't change the question. Good catch!

Ok, NOW I can pick that one! I smell the milk, if it smell ok, then I drink away...

and you're right, with that many preservatives, it's hard for it to spoil easily. We have a heck of a time though with the Bolo Rolls we by a our local Kroger store. They grow moldy very fast. We have gotten to where we split the bag up to about 2 or 3 at a time and freeze the rest...

Use by date is the date set for the shops' use by, not the consumers'. It depends on the food type how much time can be allowed. Stuff that needs refrigeration is safe two days after the use by date (assuming it has been kept cold) - often more.

The problem with expiration dates is some are use by and others are sell by.

When we were over visiting my grandmother (dad's side) once, my mom noticed that there was some sour cream in the fridge that had expired a year or two ago. My mom pointed this out, only to be told that it had been used in whatever we had the previous night. And that it being that old only makes it better!

When sour cream goes bad does it turn sweet?

You say that like it's a bad thing. So, the label becomes MORE TRUE?
