Home Economics 101

Welcome to the Home Ec Section. Matters of the family sometimes bring joy and other times bring grief. But it is never trivial: Family matters! Feel free to discuss topics such as the sanctity of marriage; the awesome responsibility of raising children; the struggles of communication problems; the grief of losing a loved one; or anything else that relates to the home and family. However, due to the more personal nature of this section, I ask that you would be especially thoughtful of the readers' feelings. My earnest hope and prayer is that the discussions in this section will help families grow in the love of Christ.

But remember, always play by the rules: here

My best friend and I like to go to Chinese places to celebrate any kind of "event." It's harder now, since many, including the one in my town, are doing the "no dining room" thing. We only go to buffets. I wish I had her metabolism. She piles her plate two levels deep, but still stays trim and fit. I lost about 15 pounds with whatever malady I had in winter '19-'20 and have kept it off, but I'm still just about half a point shy of "obese" on the BMI scale.

We've both been craving food from Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe, a regional favorite. Complete anti-health food. I want two dogs -- one with chili, cheese, and onions, and one with kraut -- and half an order of chili cheese fries. Been quite a few months since I've indulged.

It's been even longer since I had anything other than a Shamrock Shake from either McD's or BK.

Also been quite a while since I've had pizza, other than the lame frozen stuff from Giant Eagle. Several decent pizza places around here, but no fun to order alone. Johnny's is probably the local favorite. Pizza Joe, which I believe is a regional brand, is my preference.

For some reason, I really enjoy the "Food that Built America" series on The History Channel.

Our Chinese place switched to "to go" and "curbside only" service - where they used to have a very full buffet.
I know the manager, and he says his costs are WAY down and his profits UP, so he's considering sticking with "no dining room", at least for the foreseeable future.
And their food is always hot and fresh even when we get home.

We so rarely eat out that I think it results in about thrice a year. And we prefer Chinese food that we can pick up and bring home. We have a pretty good place called Wok n Go that only does take out and it's actually quite tasty.

We go to Wendy's occasionally, but the only time we've gone in the past year we had to go to the drive through, which Mr. mossy hates to do, and by the time we got home (a drive of about 5 minutes), everything was ice cold. Even the meat in the burgers was cold. That has never happened from Wendy's before when we go in and order, so we have avoided going since.

We gave up on MacDonald's and Allen and Wright's a long time ago.

So, for a birthday or anniversary, it's usually Chinese.

I haven't ate at a fast food place in about 2 years now.
    (mostly cuz of COVID)

I usually only eat at a fast food place like McDonald's if I am super busy like traveling on the road or at work and forgot my lunch and just need some fuel. I don't really miss it either. Every once in a while I do want some Pizza so I will order form Papa John's. usually no more than a couple of times a year.

I have been trying to eat healthy and the only way to do that is to eat at home. Hasn't helped me lose any weight, but at least I am not eating too much salt and fat like you get eating out at fast food and regular restaurants.

The One Dollar Whopper - there's an App for that!

OK, so I'm actually eating better and doing much less fast food, but every once in while I want a Big Mac or a Whopper or a Quarter Pounder with Cheese.

Last night I downloaded Burger King's mobile app. Today, I looked, and the "daily special" was a Whopper for a DOLLAR!!!!
Now, naturally, they hope you supplement that with a large coke, large fries, blah blah blah....

In the app, I added bacon, cheese and extra tomato. Brought the total up to a staggering $2.28.

I pulled into the drive-thru line, told the lady I bought online, and told her my name, and she told me 'go to the farthest window'.

That means I skip the "pay me" window!

She handed me my bag, and I "hefted" it - thinking that's a LOT of weight for less than $2.50.
As I was driving away, I peeked in the bag, and there was a large order of fries!

I was almost home, where I opened my Whopper, and to my delight - it had cheese, extra tomato and BACON!!!
Just like I ordered it without having to repeat it a bunch of times, and correct the employee when they got it wrong.
