So, yeah, maybe a pharmacist who really cares.
The major perks and incentives that pharmaceutical companies used to offer doctors (and some pharmacists) have pretty much stopped because of some huge criminal and civil settlements. It used to be a major problem, up until the late 90s, but then diminished and is now very limited and strictly controlled, in some states more rigorously than others. Doctors are still paid for their time when they participate in clinical trials, and there are obviously many, many more clinical trials for the more expensive prescription branded products that still have patent protection. Clinical trials are being better controlled now also. It used to be possible to hide negative trial results but that is no longer allowed. All results must be posted, usually on ClinicalTrilas.gov or also on some drug companies' websites.

Yeah, I thought about that as I typed it... I don't see NEAR the "pharmaceutical rep" stuff I used to see.

AND, the two clinical trials my wife was invited to be part of when she was diagnosed with cancer were just WAY too impractical for her to do. They paid her parking, or something like that, but she would have had to make a visit every week to downtown Houston at her own expense, taking a day off work each week, and the "drug" she would be trying wasn't even promising to do that much for her cancer -- IF she received the drug and not the placebo.

      Good points!

How interesting is that there is no mention of "natural" pain relievers so far. I wonder why, did most readers try them and found them unsafe or wanting?

When my head hurts, I whack my thumb with a hammer --- I totally forget my head hurts.

Is THAT what you're talking about?

I mentioned herbal remedies but only from the perspective of safey and the danger of interaction with OTC and prescription drugs. My wife does herbs; I don't usually, but every one in a while I'm tempted to chew on some tree bark. Does that count?

It is often best to figure out what is causing the pain and discontinue it. For example, poor posture can cause backaches. The solution should not be just to grab the pain bottle. Rather maintain good posture. Another example is to find a way to handle your stresses better, such as meditation.

You realize that if a person has intense pain from say....breaking a bone, or being pregnant, they cannot simply "make the cause" go away and sometimes the natural remedy isn't enough.
Also food for though, if a person is having a heart attack, you give them aspirin, you can't make the heart attack go away. So.....ummm calm the crazy down a notch or two.

And I'm one of the twebbers who uses LOTS of "all-natural/organic" stuff.

I am sure he realizes that and is not crazy. He merely said that it is often best to figure out what is causing the pain and discontinue it. That is wise advice. I had chronic sinus headaches for years and usually just accepted them after having tried many different things prescribed by various specialists. I took allergy shots for a couple of years, 'though I only have very mild allergies, many courses of antibiotics and other analgesics and anti-inflammatories, one guy wanted me to have sinus surgery, but two other surgeons said there was absolutely no reason for surgery. Eventually one surgeon told me that some 60% (or higher, can't remember) of sinus headaches are actually caused by neck and spine problems so he sent me to a physical therapist and it seems that the ultimate cause was an injury to my upper back caused by stupidly dinving off an Olympic high dive platform when I was a fearless kid in Munich. The muscle spasms eventually resulted in permanently tight muscles around my upper spine and neck, which over the years shrank and became extraordinarily tight. As these tight muscles were stretched in physicial therapy, my sinus headaches went away.

I know from experience (as HR / IT Director) that a lot of chronic headaches and neckaches can be minimized or "healed" by repositioning one's computer monitor at work. I've seem people stack books under their monitor to try to get them up "high enough", and don't understand that they're creating a source of pain for themselves. Somebody who works at a computer all day needs to have the screen at the right height AND distance. Something else I have recommended is "computer glasses" for those who wear bifocals or trifocals -- a cheap pair of single focus glasses to be worn at the desk, rather than "cocking your head" to look through the proper (often very narrow) "window" of your glasses that allow you to see 18" to 24" away.

What herbs are there for painkillers, and do they deal with muscle spasms/tension headaches? (Already familiar with bengay, tiger balm, other menthol rubs.)
