I lost 25% of my colonies over the winter. But to be honest one of my colonies did not accept their winter hardy queen so . . .

My church lost our hive. That makes 5, I think, since we started 3 years ago.

Y'know, I kinda assumed the colony just automatically accepted their queen! Interesting!

DB, I have read lots about the massive losses we are seeing in the bee world. These losses are not all winter losses. The world of commercial pollination looses lots of bees. In general exposure to various chemicals; pesticides, herbicides, mitacides, antibiotics, all weaken bees - as the article pointed out. I, on the other hand, do not put any chemicals into my hives, and since I do not get into the pollination game I do not get pesticide exposure.

I am involved locally in an effort to breed, through selection, bees that will survive in Alaska with minimum human assistance. If you are interested you can check out http://alaskabeeinitiative.com/

The last hive was doing well, but the winter was too cold for too long. We gave a jar of honey to all the mothers in the church on Mother's Day.

I always loved giving my honey to various family members, friends, etc. I began selling honey a few years ago to pay for my bees which normally did not survive the winter. Now that I seem to be able to successfully winter bees I hope to stop selling and return to giving it away.
