  • My cat has FIV

That's the feline version of HIV.

I guess I won't be finding him a home after all. Never intended to keep him.

Anyway, management is to feed him high protein cat food and daily dosage of L-lysine HCL.

FIV is NOT contagious but it does mean he shouldn't be with other cats (doc's recommend) unless he doesn't get into fights with other cats (Internet comments). His known history doesn't inspire me with confidence that he'd be safe with others. So......

I had several infected with FIV and even without treatment (not available then) they did fairly well. My uninfected cats were vaccinated and I never had any further spread. But Deutsch got out and promptly got into a fight which caused him to decline very quickly after that so I would go with the vet's recommendation.

Ok. He did have upper respiratory infection so got an antibiotic shot rather than pills. I do know how to give kitties pills but it's a hassle. So right now...and it's probably my overactive watching...but he seems to tire more than he did before. We'll see.

Do Pill Pockets work for your cat? They've been a lifesaver with my dog.

He very rarely takes treats. He doesn't seem to care for people food. I tried to give him turkey at Thanksgiving and he really wasn't interested. Yeah. I know.

Try baby food if you need to - cats will usually go for it even when they aren't big on treats.

Next time you have occasion to make a pumpkin pie, give him a bit of the pumpkin (NOT pie mix!) - almost all of mine will eat it and several go crazy for it.

Grrr..He won't eat baby food more than once and won't eat tuna that's not fresh out of the can. Forgot to try the pumpkin...but good grief I've never had such a picky kitty!

Try cheese. Also, a dollop of cottage cheese to see if he'll go for that. It's less than ideal - oddly enough, most cats are lactose intolerant - and you need to watch that he doesn't get runny on the, er, 'exit', but he may at least eat it.

One other thing - as long as he's not in poor health yet try reducing the amount you feed him a bit (no more than 1/4) for a few days. Sometimes a 'picky' cat is just a really well fed cat.

Smokey started scratching again and has gingivitis. The vet assistant says cats with FIV can throw out stuff like this. Think I'll get some ear cleaner...that may stop his scratching around that area.

                        Thanks guys.

He is a little more than plump now. Perhaps despite the smaller amounts I feed him, and our playtime (not much .. he DOES tire sometimes), I wonder if it's the very high protein content of his food. At the moment it's the dry Fancy Feast.

what if you crush his pills and mix it with his food?

The supplemental was a tube of of goop... but yeah, I think I tried mixing the stuff in. Since he's so picky about what he touches, he probably rejected that. I'll try that though.
